Default 01 Ranger infamous belt squeek?

This thing has been going for a few years. Started out as a chirp. Replacing the belt every 5-6 months (at $40 a pop) fixed it for a couple years. Been thru 4 or 5 belts, now I almost have 100,000 miles on it.

A new belt quit fixing the problem. Now I have an all out squeal that won't go away. It's not bad at idle, but after 1500 RPM its bad. Dealer replaced the tensioner and idler pulley twice. I replaced the alternator. Their diagnosis, they thought that might be it, it wasn't.

Sounds like the squeal is in the center of the engine. So, now they want to replace the water pump at $400.

Any thoughts or help on this? It's really starting to drive me nutz,,,

I just ordered a gatorback belt to try, before sinking more money into high dollar guesses (parts).

Thanks,,,,

ETA: it's a 4.0 V-6 with A/C

The cam synchro thing is only in the 3.0's so that doesn't apply here.

Thanks so far, the belt will be here tomorrow. I'll report back, let you know if it fixes the problem.

Gatorback did the trick, everything is quiet now. Just wish I would have googled the problem sooner.

In the ( I won't say old) earlier days used to use bar soap on the belt while running to stop a squeal. Or a Crayon..it worked.

Replaced the tensioner, idler pulley and belt today. Seems as though someone else tried before me because the 8mm counter-sunk tensioner mounting bolt head was rounded off a bit. Two regular sockets snapped but an impact socket did the trick. Squeal all gone. Read on another forum about cleaning all the pullies with brake parts cleaner. Used a rat tail brush also.

You guys swear by the gatorback belts?

Sorry, but the 4.0's do have the cam synchro but it is buried under the intake. I have one to replace on my 4.0 and have the part, just have to have the time to do it.

I had to use a Gatorback belt also to get of the squeal after trying 2 different belts and tensioners. The soap, crayon, and chaulk worked but only temporarily. That was last year and no problems, now I just have replace my cam synchronizer that chirps from time to time.
