I am wondering about a few things, looking for valuable input. I have a totaled out 2001 Ranger 4.0, 4x4, automatic, ex. cab. Truck ran great until I rolled it over. Now, I have the opportunity to get a 1999 Ranger 3.0, 4x4, manual, ex. cab with a blown 3.0. My question is can I use my totaled out 2001 as a donor and swap the 4.0 into the 1999?

I understand that it wont be "plug and play" but I will have most of the electronics that I should need. What ECU can I use? I also want to keep the manual from the 1999, can I just get a bell housing to attach it to the 4.0? Will I need a new fly wheel? I understand this will involve some time and work but I have a complete donor. I do not want to swap the automatic into the 1999.

So, what parts will I need if I want to swap a 2001 4.0 into a 1999 that had a 3.0 while keeping the manual transmission? Kind of looking for a list of things needed, if that exists...

I want to know what I will need to swap a 2001 4.0 from an auto (5R55E) truck into a 1999 that had a 3.0 with manual (Mazda M50D-R1).

The 3.0 trans won't bolt to the 4.0 engine, if you get a 4.0 manual, guessing you'd need a 4.0 flywheel, might have to get a computer for a 4.0 and manual, like you say, it won't be a plug and play.

In that year I'd go straight for the 302. A lot more information out there describing the wiring differences etc. Plus the SOHC 4.0 from those years is pretty notorious for timing issues that require engine out service. They also don't make a ton more power than the 3.0 and get almost the same mpg as a 302. I feel like you'd do a lot of work and not gain very much. In fact in some cases you'd arguably loose.
