What is this in my coolant?
I have never used a leak stop additive. I just flushed the system for the first time since buying the truck 9 years ago (big mistake I know) and when I open the cap there is this material floating. I do not have coolant in my oil, no CEL, and since replacing the plastic T-Stat housing junk, no loss of coolant. Is this a bi-product or combustion gases getting into the coolant system or is this fuel?
Edit: tried to zoom in on pic and then add the zoomed in version for a better look. Dont know how to get better quality.

Re: What is this in my coolant?
Did you use the right coolant speced for the truck? If grabbed the wrong kind, they don't play well with each other. Like dexcool and regular green etc...

Re: What is this in my coolant?
Yes I used the peak North American formula compatible with ford vehicles requiring “WSS-M97B51-A1” which is the ford specification number in the manual.
But in the past as it was slowly leaking I did stupidly add water from just a regular bottle of water a few times to make sure it wasn’t low. Maybe a few ounces each time. But it had all been flushed out with the Prestone flush and then 3 rounds of distilled water flushes and one round of coolant 50/50 mix drained and now refilled. Still has this floating crap in there.

Re: What is this in my coolant?
Also, how long should it take to fully burp the air from the entire system? I let it idle for about 15-20 mins occasionally squeezing the upper radiator hose to get bubbles out. After no more, I put cap on and drove to work. Now that system has cooled, I checked it and it is low by about 12oz or so with fluid still in overflow tank to cold fill line. Is that trapped air or do I have bigger issues? Are you supposed to rev engine to cause water pump to force air out better? Or do you just need to drive and re-fill coolant a few times? Just hoping I don’t have a head gasket issue going on here.

Re: What is this in my coolant?
Proper coolant should be gold, not green.

What are the stats on your truck. You may have the wrong kind also....
If it's the 2006... then yes you have the wrong coolant. Should be Motorcraft premium gold which is yellow/gold colored.

Re: What is this in my coolant?
The picture sucks, so it does look like is more on the green side in the picture I posted but I put the gold in not the green. I flushed 4 times now total. First with distilled water til it came out clear, then with the proper fluid. Then filled back up with proper fluid. It almost looks like melted aluminum or dust.
I’m assuming if it truly was melted aluminum the truck would not be driving well or at all. Could be dust/road dirt getting into the overflow and then getting sucked back in to radiator but I think I’ll just do the chemical test to check for exhaust gases to rule that out

Re: What is this in my coolant?
the picture on my coolant overflow tank says use green and not gold, but I read the manual (2007), and the manual said to use gold.... so, I'm buying gold from now on....
that's weird though....

Re: What is this in my coolant?
I believe Gold is used primarily for aluminum engines such as the Duratecs. I understand that Ford is specifying yellow coolant for everything now and then. Prestone and Motorcraft yellow coolant. Be careful flushing the system out if you are going to use the motorcraft yellow because it won't work and play well with tap water.

Yes. I was always told that when mixing coolant or using water - never use tap because of minerals and deposits. Always use Distilled. Plus, the low cost of pre-mixed and ready-to-use coolant makes it convenient to pop hood and add as needed.
