While I was looking under the hood of my 2002 XLT 4.0 attempting to identify the smell and also figure out if I have a valve cover leak I noticed how dirty it is behind my power steering pulley.

Does it look like this has gone bad? Could this be the smell I have noticed? The weird thing is if it is I have not noticed any issues with the steering.

If the fluid level is normal, then don't worry about it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have noticed the coolant reservoir running low and I had to refill it a couple of times since I changed my thermostat housing last year. Could this be from a coolant leak? The thermostat housing and water pump pulley look dry and clean, unlike the power steering pump.

Just noticed a steady drip today of coolant. I’m thinking it’s coming from the water pump but I need to do some more checking.
