Default Ford Explorer 4.0 bolted to my 97 ranger 5 speed rwd

My engine is the 2.3, I seen the transmission I'm using is a M50D-R1. With some google I seen the ford explorer uses the same transmission.
I feel like if you just have to make mounts it's a pretty good powerplant. I'm more curious why more people havent done it..

Because you would have to change the whole wiring harness also and make some custom exhaust. I'm sure it can be done if the bell housing bolts match up but it would be a bit of work overall. It would be more fun and common to put a carb'd 302 in it and a T5 manual.

Okay I dont know much about wiring, from what I read the bell housing should match.
If I could keep the tranny and bolt on a carbed 302 I deffinitly would rather do that. I was looking for a list of engines that mount without luck.

The M50D-R1 might fit an old 302. I'm not sure. Someone else will hopefully chime in. From what I've heard around it's not a very strong trans. A stock 302 wouldn't put out much more power than a 4.0 so it would hold up to that I think.

2wd or 4x4?
