Default Timing chain rattle. How bad is it.

I have replaced the 2 accessible tensioners and it didn’t seem to help at all. I used the cloyes brand. Not sure if that matters. Is my next step to replace the timing chains with a kit(i.e. pull the dang motor?!?!)

I linked a video of the rattle.

I see no one wants to comment on this video but can anyone comment on what timing kit you have used if you have replaced yours. Mine is 2002 xlt 4.0 4x4. I can find aftermarket kits but the more I read reviews on them the less comfortable I am in using them. But ford sure makes it hard to buy from them because I don’t see a full kit anywhere. I checked the thread where someone listed all these part numbers to get everything individually but I’m confused on whether or not these will fit mine because they don’t all appear to be listed as compatible with my vehicle.

Turns out it was bad. Rear cassette broken in many pieces. No wonder replacing the hydraulic tensions didn’t fix the rattle.

When I was doing the right side timing(the rear which is left hand threaded to tighten) I think I over torqued it by a lot. I think since it was left handed my torque wrench didn’t like it and just never clicked. When I realized it should have clicked already loosened it and tried again. Same thing happened. So I tried a different torque wrench and it seemed to work. My question is did I damage something by over torquing. Should I replace the bolt to be safe?

Are my posts being seen by anyone or am I a ghost? I ended up ordering a new bolt. My father in law said that the bolt stretches when over torqued and to replace it.

Thanks! I thought for sure I would at least get a smart ass comment from someone like dvrich telling me how stupid I am at the very least. Good to know the posts are there. Thanks for confirming.

I’m not sure exactly what you are asking for help with. Are you needing help with posting stuff? If so I would recommend downloading the Tapatalk app as it makes it easy to post photos and stuff.

I went through the same problem with timing chain rattle in my 2001. required to pull engine to replace right rear, so I just replaced the whole engine with a ford remanufactures engine. I had a little over 217,000 miles and body is in near perfect condition (and love my ranger) so spent money on engine.

I’m actually already almost done putting the engine back in after replacing the timing components among other things. How much did the reman engine cost?

Shit, if I had known you did this job yourself, I'd have asked to borrow the damn timing tools instead of spending close to $200 to buy them.

You totally could have. I haven’t sold them off yet. I figured I’d sell them and the hoist and engine stand after I’m sure my work is done. I got everything together and had a small leak from the thermostat housing so I got an aluminum one and got it back together yesterday. Started it up and it fixed the leak but I noticed the exhaust manifolds smoking. I’m hoping it was just burning off fluids that got on them

Unless your valve cover or head gaskets are leaking, I'm sure it's just fluid burning off.

I'm going to replace my head gaskets when I do my timing chains. Even though they aren't leaking, why? Because 156k miles. Not going to pull the engine and do all this work just to have to do head gaskets in 30k miles.

I just drove it around for a bit and no more smoke. Everything seemed to run great. Whew. I plugged it up to my forscan just see what the data says and I got an error code in the GEM. B1359. Guess I gotta do some pinpoint tests now.
