Default 2004 ranger 4.0 sohc. cranks/ no start

As the title implies. Wife drove it home from work, no issues. Went to run an errand about an hour or so later, it started and briefly ran (rough), then died and wouldn't restart. Would like to do electrical checks first. Searched but couldn't find a schematic for powertrain
control for an '04. Anyone know where I might find one? The fuel pump was changed a year or two ago, can't remember, but that doesn't mean
it's ok necessarily. I am getting constant power thru fuse #23 in the underhood power distribution box, key turned ON or Off, makes no difference, 23 is always lit. This seems wrong to me, but I am totally open to any ideas or corrections you guys might have pertinate to what
I have tried so far. Thanks in advance....jim

Turn the key forward and check the schrader valve on the fuel rail to see if it has fuel pressure. If not, then check the fuel pump inertia switch in the cab under the dash. See if it got tripped somehow.. It does happen..

If all of the fuel system checks out, then check for spark at one of your spark plug wires.

it turned out to be the inertia switch was tripped. It did it again later today and the same symptoms. reset switch and all is well. Must be time for a new switch. Thanks everybody

Once tripped those switches are junk.... A mild fart will trip them once used.

Good deal! Glad to have confirmation that my suggestion ended up being the problem for once. We don't often hear back from the original poster on these threads..

Luckily the switches are an easy find/fix and easy to swap out as well.

Now, tell the wife to slow down and stop ram-jamming over those potholes so fast! lol j/k

Can a inertia switch sometimes work and sometimes not? My truck wouldn't start, had it towed to my favorite mechanic shop, they claimed the inertia switch was at fault. Ran great for a couple of weeks now returning back to a hard starting problem again. I bought a new crank sensor if it fails again and then will investigate the fuel pump, if that don't fix it. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I posted and didn't get a differentiate response. Thanks

Any switch of any kind can work intermittently whenever it decides it's had enough. It would be a cheap part to replace just to eliminate that as a possibility. In your case it could be the inertia switch, a bad ground, or a wire that has some corrosion inside of it, a pinched or almost broken wire, etc..

If it were me, when the truck was refusing to start, I'd listen for the fuel pump kicking on first. Then go from there.

Another thing to check that will be obvious is, the connector shell
for the wires. may have melted (over time) from a bad connection.
you'll know it soon as you undo the clasp, it will show melted plastic
and will need replaced, may even fall to pieces when you disconnect
it.
