which engine oil?
My Ranger 4.0 SOC has 110,000 miles on it. After the last oil change, I noticed more noise in the engine. Online advice received suggests replacing the oil with a SYN. motor oil.
Which one does most experts here like?
And thanks,

I currently run Mobile1 because I find it on sale at CostCo. I have used Fords, but it is a blend.
This will be a question that starts plenty of arguments...lol!

Re: which engine oil?
I personally use Pennzoil platinum high mileage full synthetic. Damn that's a mouthful lol. So far it's good, been doing a lot of highway miles and some city, with a lot of racing around on backroads and higher rpms and it still looks really good after all of that. I used to swear by Valvoline, but after the same abuse I put Pennzoil through it would be much darker. You've opened a can of worms and an argument that could go on for days, good luck.

^^^ Also a Mobile1 fan, full synthetic, no blends, no high-mileage. Only thing I havent found it good for is some turbo/charged cars.. seems to "foam" up in some. But anything else its my go to oil I got my truck at 182K i'm at 352k as of now and although I don't beat on my truck, I do expect a lot from it.

That is a good data point about boosted cars. I haven't owned one in so long, well, lets just say that synthetic wasn't a question then, and leave it at that shall we?

Are you saying you got your oil straight from the Dinosaur-tap itself before
it was bottled? LOL

Re: which engine oil?
There are plenty of good oils on the market, and as long as you change it before it breaks down it's not going to matter significantly which you choose.
That said, I run Rotella T6 because it's a decent synthetic that's widely available at a reasonable price, and can be used in motorcycles with wet clutches as well.

Re: which engine oil?
With the SOHC 4.0 oil weight matters more than oil type or brand. Synthetic or dinosaur juice. Your choice. Although nearly everyone I've ever known with a 4.0 ran synthetic..
The timing chain tensioner system relies on oil weight, and the viscosity of the oil once heated. Thicker/heavier oils take longer being pushed through oil galleries and thus take longer to apply pressure to the tensioner. Timing chain rattle on start-up really changes quite a bit after changing oil weight. It also changes a lot based on the mileage your oil currently has due to viscosity breakdown.

I'm curious now, on what your ideas, opinions, backgrounds, are on based upon break down of oils; specifically here in the synthetic realms.
In 2018 You have::
- Mercedes Benz backed up by Mobile 1 oil telling all of their Service customers; First oil change, 20,000 miles.. see you then. 2-3 years ago it was 15k miles
- Nissan - 7500 miles normal driving , if its a truck and your using it offroad or rural situations 5000 miles or as needed
Toyota - Same.. 7500 miles or as needed
Newer Fords, Atl least as of 2013-14 5000 miles as well and I would assume still or maybe similar to Nissan/Toyota
All running synthetic oils from the factory, in brand new engines. Old conventional oil had high zinc properties to replenish/coat the internal moving parts, bearings and such, the cylinder walls.. etc as they wore down without so much. Ask any 90's Honda/Acura guy driving down the street with his engine sounding like he was shaking up a can of spray paint how often he changed his oil or put in a quart cause he was burning it.. soon after bearing failures inevitable.
and yet today.., in 2018 we have guys still changing synthetic oil at 3000-3500 miles and i just wanted to state for the record the ludicrous thought processes that come to mind with that. Unless you work in a coal mine with your personal truck.. highly a waste of money, time, and oil.
btw all jokes aside.. Oil doesn't come from dino's

Re: which engine oil?
I remember the countless oil threads on this site. Comments ranged from changing to synthetic makes my engine run smoother and quieter.....increased fuel economy by 2 mpg......more power......and so on. All nonsense! Mobil 1 EP at Walmart is $26 for a 5 qt jug and a motorcraft filter. If Wally World doesn't have the EP, I just use Motorcrat blend which is excellent oil.

I laugh at that too. If oil came from rotting Dinosauers then there must have been a trillion centillions of them and that's not possible and that will be the US national debt after the next few years. LOL

Re: which engine oil?
None of you can really prove that conventional oil doesn't have actual dinosaur juice in it. We all realize where it actually comes from, but still, you can't prove it.

I typically change at 5-7k miles when I'm paying attention to it. Ideally I'd run an oil analysis at 7k and extend based on the results. That's my plan once the swap is complete on the '99. I'll change the oil now with conventional, probably again in a thousand miles with synthetic, then check it after 5 or 7k with Blackstone to see how it looks.
