Default Lose all power when trying to turn the engine over, until I disconnect the battery

[1998 Ranger 4WD 4.0 V6]

I have full battery power, lights, radio, everything works, until I try and turn the engine over. One time I got one click on the starter and everything went dead, but most times I get nothing and all the power is gone. I get power back in the truck if I simply disconnect and reconnect the battery. This indicates that it's not a battery or starter problem, but maybe a relay or electrical problem.

I've had the battery tested good and charged and it has the same effect if I try to jump it.

Does anyone have advice on what to try or any help at all?

Thanks

Sounds like a bad ground connection.

Loose connection to the battery or bad ground as said above. This has happened to me exactly and the cable had rattled loose and was just sitting barely touching the terminal.

This is what it ended up being. New battery and terminal connectors solved the problem.

Thanks
