Default intermittant fuel gauge malfunction

2004 ranger, long bed, 4.0 engine.
Last year fuel pump went bad, changed it, and all was well. I was able to find an aftermarket pump WITHOUT the fuel gauge sending unit, so
naturally, I left the sender alone. Recently, the gauge goes dead and low fuel light comes on for brief periods, then goes back to normal.
Pretty sure the unit is bad. No driveability issues when this happens.
My question is, does anyone make the sender only, or do you have to buy the entire pump module with pump from Ford? Also, on a possibly
unrelated note, would this in any way cause the "loose gas cap" light to
illuminate? Could these two symptoms point to a malfunctioning instrument cluster? thx.....jim

I'd look for a faulty connection or connector for your fuel gauge or sending unit before I pulled the unit from the tank. As for your 'loose gas cap' thing...…. I'd look for a crack in the filler hose, check that clamps are tight make sure the flange gasket on the tank pump is not leaking or damaged. I'm an idiot but it helps me to look at everything.

Thanks Arttie for that information..Nothing wrong with being thorough
when troubleshooting. I'll keep your suggestions in mind, and post up
if I find anything.
