I'm new here. I had a friend helping me with my truck. 2000 ranger XLT 4x4 4.0 V6. I needed to install a fan clutch. In the process he broke a sensor next to my thermostat housing.. He also nicked the water pump pulley.. What is the sensor and how can I replace it. Also can I file down the pulley? Here's a couple pics. Thanks in advance..

What is broken with the sensor, the sensor itself or the plug? If it has a single wire running to it, it is the engine coolant temperature sender for the dash gauge. Cheap part, easy to replace, just remove it and install a new one. There will probably be some coolant leakage FWIW. You will need to retop it back off. I usually teflon tape the threads in such a fashion that there's still a good ground between the lower intake and the sender threads.

The pulley, I would sand the rough edges with some very fine grit sand paper "with the grain."

Ok another day.. I had a mechanic come out and look at the truck today.. He said it was the water pump.. I replaced it. I thought it would be done.. "FU#K NO".. Its even louder.. Anyone have any ideas? I a lot $400 in the hole and the truck is F#CKen loud..

What does it sound like? Does change with engine speed, when you turn the steering wheel, turn on the a/c or defroster, etc... It will help us figure out what may be the problem.

Its the sound of a swelling pulley.. It all started off with a light swelling sound. I replaced the idler pulley. It didn't make any change. A couple days later I bought a new serpentine belt. The noise went away.. I sprayed the barring of the pulleys with belt dressing too. 40+ miles and a few days later the noise came back. Only under load about 3K RPMS and 20+ MPH. I sprayed a little belt dressing and nothing. So I started by replacing the tensioner pulley. Nothing. Next was the alternator. Seemed to work. 1 block into the drive the squeak came back under load. Next I replaced the fan clutch. Seemed to be fine and then it started to squeak again.. Today I replaced the water pump. It seemed to be worn down. The barring made a slight pitch when the impeller would spin. I thought I found the problem. NOPE.. I was told there are 4 sized belts for the 2000 ranger but nobody has them.. Now this is where I am..

Sounds like a squeaking pulley. It doesn't change with the wheel turned to the left or right. Its the same with the ac on or off. I haven't tried the defroster yet. I'm going to try to start it without a belt tomorrow morning to eliminate the internal problem.. Just stumped.

Sounds like your headed in the right direction. If the squeal persists, a stethoscope may help pin point where it's coming from. Just don't run it too long with out the water pump turning.

I have found on my 2001 the only serpentine belt that will not squeek is the Gatorback. And no belt dressing. I would recommend the idler and tensioner as those are weak points too but you already hit those.
