Default Help Identify Weird Noise

I have an 02 4.0 4x4 automatic. Coming home this afternoon, I had my windows down and heard a weird noise when I came up to a stop sign. When I braked and got below about 10-15 mph, I heard a weird high-pitched sound coming from my truck that continued until I completely stopped. While stopped, the noise didn’t happen. Once I started accleraleraring again, the noise came back and continued until I got up to about 10-15 mph. At speeds higher than that, the noise seemed to disappear. This continued all the way home any time I was moving below 10-15 mph. I tried to pinpoint the noise and it was definitely coming from the front of the truck, but I couldn’t tell if it was coming from the driver’s side wheel well or from the engine bay. The noise I heard is hard to describe but it was like a high-pitched whining noise. It’s not an extremely loud noise but it is definitely noticeable, especially with the windows down. I have no idea how long it has been going on for, today is the first time I heard it. Anybody have an idea what it could be?

Sounds like a possible misaligned brake wear indicators. Obviously a moving part is involved by the sounds of it.

Pull the wheel, check the brakes for tolerances and if good take a small pick tool or flat head screwdriver and make a small adjustment to the metal tabs poking out at the rotors. If not, replace pads and check rotors for unusual wear, tolerances, and cracks.

There is also a slight possibility related to your fuel pump especially if fuel filter not replaced recently.

I checked the brake pads on both sides, and they look fine. They aren’t even a year old. The wear indicators are far from the rotors. Any other ideas? Here’s the link to a video I recorded of the sound

What is up with all these vertical videos people? Are movies played vertically?

I wasn’t aware that I posted a movie, nor that there are technology police patrolling this site. Thanks for informing me!

Have you lifted the front end off the ground without the tire and hand turned the rotor assembly to listen for the noise?

People think they are cool recording vertical videos. Vertical videos suck.

There is a very good chance that the noise is coming from the Excluder Seal between the steering knuckle and the outer CV housing. These dry out and start to squeal at low speed. A cleaning and a fresh application of grease to the seal lip should stop it. Replacing the seal and greasing it is an even better option. This is for 2000-up 4WD Ranger. There was a service bulletin (Ford TSB # 01-11-4) that specifically covered 2000~2001 but the squeal can also happen on later year 4x4 Rangers.

People like this severely defame this site. It’s a shame.

Meanwhile, people like this keep this site running. Thanks man. I’ll definitely look into that.

Well, I'm pretty hard of hearing but I think you should look at the idler pulley bearing.
