Default Loss of power??

I have a 94 4.0/5-speed/2 wheel with 180k miles. Every once in a while it will loss power. It starts by slowing down and the tach drooping to almost nothing. Then it die's I"m able to restart but it's very hard. It act's like a vapor lock kind of thing. If I let it sit for a while (each time is different) it'll start and run like a champ. I'm not a "car" guy so any directions I can be given would be great.

TIA,

James

Is this while under throttle or when your at idle at a stop by chance? Do you get the Check engine light before it dies?

It starts while under throttle. Yes to the check engine light. I've taken it in but they can't find any codes.

So it runs better cold, than it does under a load/accelerating when it’s at operating tempature? Sounds like a tempature Sensor gone bad, should be one sticking vertically out of the lower intake, pretty common to go bad.

Well if it kicks the light on, even temporarily it should be storing a soft code. Do you have a scan tool for that yr truck? they're relatively cheap but worse case scenario you can do it with a paper clip almost really and pull your own codes too. The scan tool that plugs into the under hood diagnostic plug is just easier and nice to have.

Where are you taking it to pull codes btw?

In the interim, do any gauges reflect an issue; temp wise to correlate with B-trains suggestion?

My question would be more relative towards when it happens under throttle, does it always seem to happen in the same way? Like maybe getting into the vertical pedal to overtake a lane or just random romp?

If so I would suspect a TPS [throttle position sensor] more and due to the possible inconsistency in an intermittent short of sorts more than a coolant sensor just yet. I kind of think this due to the action your describing and the fact even a 10-20 min run isn't usually enough to put an engine into a thermal shutdown mode and after waiting only a matter of minutes or even 20 drive like new again.
