Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
I have one last thought regarding me replacing the tensioners and the start-up rattle remaining- I didn’t “prime” the tensioners when I installed them. I didn’t pump them full of oil before putting them in. Could that still be the issue?

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
Unbelievably, that was the issue. The rear tensioner never self-primed. I pulled it out, pumped it full of oil, put it back in— no rattle. Crazy, but I’m praying I didn’t cause too much damage

4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
Wow that’s crazy, I would think it would prime itself. I hope that takes care of your issue. However, I’m wondering if that tensioner is defective, because it should have filled with oil on its own. Good luck with it.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
After ten starts since, there has been absolutely no rattle. Fired my truck up today at 20 degrees, zero rattle. It is leaking oil a tiny bit, so I need to get my torque wrench and get it down to 45 or so ft-lbs and then go from there. I really think this took care of my issues.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
You may have to go a little tighter to get a seal because I’m guessing that you had to re-use the washer from the old tensioner since the new one doesn’t come with it.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
Well, update. Rattle slowly but surely came back from the rear timing system. Pulled out that "new" tensioner and it was EMPTY. It had no prime- no oil pressure, just spring pressure. I tried pumping it full of oil, and I could squeeze it all out at once. So I primed the old one up and put it back in because it actually holds a prime. There's still a rattle, but it's honestly not as bad as it was with the "new" tensioner. Just ordered another genuine one from a different supplier on Amazon.... Are the cassettes and the timing system just is messed up, but only allow rattling at start up? Any ideas or thoughts are very, very appreciated.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
The spring gets worn out when the tensioner is not holding oil, and the spring is what holds tension on the cassette on start up until the oil pressure comes up. Hopefully a genuine Ford Tensioner fixes the problem.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
Finally got to replacing the tensionsers today. The LH tensioner, front of the engine, is bear to get to!
After removing the tensioner I can not find any gasket ring. I scraped the area on the block carefully with a small screwdriver and am not seeing or feeling a gasket ring. Is it in a counterbore?
I purchase (2) new gasket rings with the Ford tensioners and am puzzled.
Also, I am seeing that if you pre-prime them they can be difficult to install. Some saying that they messed-up the port threads. Should I pre-prime? I really don't want to have to do this two times.
Thanks.

Re: 4.0 SOHC Timing Chain Still Rattles
I know this is an older thread, but I primed both of my tensioners when I replaced them, and also used two new washers. The front tensioner had a washer but the rear did not. Changed mine right at 70K miles ( or 110,000 KM ) and all seems well 6 months in. Didn't have any issue before and don't have any now.....knock on wood.
