4.0 OHV Fan Clutch
Hey all, I just purchased a '96 Ranger extended cab, 4.0 v6 manual 5 speed with 155K miles on the clock. The motor is clean and hasn't leaked a drop since I drove it 25 miles home. However, I noticed that the engine driven fan stays on all the time and responds to engine rpm, and the truck ran very cool. The fan is obnoxiously loud and I can't even hear the motor until the valves start clicking . I'm thinking the fan clutch is bad, because it was 40 degrees out last night and dropping, and I don't think the motor needed extra cooling power....

Re: 4.0 OHV Fan Clutch
Yup it took a crap, look in junk yards for a replacement. Try to spin the fan if it spins freely then most likely the clutch is good.

It will nearly always stay on, Ive yet to ever see one stall or not spin. In closed loop when the engine is cold, mine could be a little obnoxious at times. Far less if I started it and let it run for 5 mins or so.
Ford run naturally hot for some reason, engine speed and driving will get an engine quite warm even in single digit weather, even negatives. May take longer to warm up the cabin but the engine seems to almost work like a constant variable more than you think.
If the Exhaust is stock, or even disconnected after the Cat, it will have the sound of an angelic-fly-fart, hardly noticeable at all. So the expectation of hearing even a mild roar is more subtle and kitten like, even with a K&N filter intake filter.
Actually makes me think of adding my headers on and going back to a stock can and full length exhaust and adding a electronic valve dump just after the cat to uncork it when I want/need it. The flowmaster 40 drone can get annoying at times, especially when on a business call and being on the road.

Fords run hot because the stock thermometer is a 190F. The fan clutch should not be engaged all the time, the only time mine is engaged is in the middle of the summer, sitting in traffic with the A/C on. My ‘04 went bad and was on all the time. When the vehicle is cold the fan should spin freely.

Come to this side of the Mississippi especially the South West Pacific.. (Nevada, SoCal, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico (not to be confused with California), Colorado..ect
Shy of a few cold nights in the upper 40's here even the last month or so the weather still breaks 75-85* here in Vegas. Summer temps remnant of 118* on average. A 122* day isn't unheard of here in the Desert Aug to early Oct.
- 93' OHV with near 350K (original engine), 2 core Mishimoto Rad, Mishimoto 180* T stat, Standard 50/50 mix, 2 bottle of RedLine water wetter, NO A/C on.. daily traffic - My fans generally running, still hot even with temps in low range. Granted up a hill, full load out, needle never moves until low speeds off-roading at times. Only waiting on one more component to finish the 2 stage E-fan setup, mostly for the ability to shut the fans off altogether for water crossings.

Re: 4.0 OHV Fan Clutch
Thanks for the advice! I am going to wait until next weekend to change my fan clutch and focus on more important details today: an oil change.
