Default 4.0 SOHC cassette out of alignment

2001 xlt 4x4 ranger.

I replaced the valve cover gaskets and I noticed the back passenger side chain cassette is out of alignment.

I hear no noise coming from the chain, but I know this can’t be good over time.

I’ve tried the search function for “cassette alignment” and I’m having trouble finding info on this online.

How can I fix this? How bad is this?

The cassette looks like it's broken and needs to be replaced.

Iím gonna have to take the valve cover back off and thoroughly check it out. I know the engine needs to be pulled for any rear chain work on the 4.0 sohc. But Iím wondering if itís just out of alignment and if thatís fixable without pulling the engine.

Hard to tell from pictures, but Iíd say that cassette is no good. Replace it as soon as possible. These are interference engines and if that thing breaks or skips youíll be replacing the whole engine when a piston smacks a valve.

Hurts to hear. Recently purchased about 4 months ago. Iíve heard of this issue before and really took my time to listen to this engine starting, idyling and reving when I was purchasing it. Even now after a thousand miles of fire trails it runs and sounds great. I hear no chain noise what so ever. The chain tension is tight too. But I know this will eventually become the dreaded 4.0 sohc common issue.

What the heck did they do to revise his issue in the new model 4.0 sohc. Just seems like such a flaw to have plastic/Nylon guides.

Iím not sure whatís cheaper or the best idea. fixing this. Selling this (Iíll lose value now on this truck), new 4.0 sohc or maybe a coyote swap.

Unfortunately 01-02 Rangers are notorious for this it should have been a recall. They upgraded the whole cassette and chain tensioners Ď03 and up do not have this problem. After you replace the cassettes and long as you use only 5W30 and change the oil every 3,000 miles you shouldnít have this problem again. My Ď11 has 104k and my friends Ď07 has 230k no issues with either.

This truck has 160k miles on it.

Iím just so bummed because it drives so well. The chain tension is very stiff and like I said, you canít hear a thing and I only saw it because I changed the valve cover gaskets.

I canít imagine the cost for this fix, And im nervous to find out. I donít have a cherry picker. Would I be able to get to it by removing the transmission? Or is the hassle to much and I should just sell?

I just did the exhaust system last week, valve cover gaskets the week prior and it has a 5.5inch rcd coil over lift. I had other plans for this truck this coming weekend and now everything is abruptly canceled now until I figure this out.

Iím not sure if removing the transmission would allow access, because the engine is tight to the firewal, also I donít know if youíd be able to align the sprockets the sprockets properly I donít know if youíd be able to see the marks. However, what about renting a cherry picker?
