Default 4.0 OHV Swap

I’ve got a 1993 Ford Ranger 4.0 ohv motor I’m swapping into a 1996 Ford Ranger that had a 4.0, using the 1996 wiring harness and electrical components. But do I need to use the lower intake, injectors, and upper intake/plenum off the 1996 and put onto the 1993 motor? Also the 1996 has an egr valve, does that need to go onto the 1993 motor for the truck to run correctly with no check engine lights ?

I’m sure there has been a post about this, I looked but couldn’t find anything detailed on the intake and egr

Are you using the ECM from the ‘96?

Then you have to use the egr. Is there any way you can just use the block and heads from the 96. And keep the 93 ECM and wiring? EGR sucks ass

Not to mention it robs power and decreases engine life by jamming carbon exhaust back down the intake.

What year model has the long block? If ones a long block, then the other is a short block? Will they be swappable? And the motor from the 1993 is going into the 1996 ranger, so I kinda have to use the factory 1996 wiring harness and ecm.. but I guess I could just make a shut off valve on the egr pipe

I was just gonna Swap everything electrical from the 1996 motor onto the 1993 motor, that way I can use the 1996 wiring harness.. but like I asked, would I have to swap the lower intake, injectors, and the upper intake from the 1996 motor onto the 1993 motor?

Cannot use the 1996 block, I think either a rod snapped or a piston did, it’s locked up

Oh ok I miss understood thought a 96 engine was going in ‘93. Sounds like you should just use the block and heads from the ‘93 that should be the easiest thing, as for the shitty EGR you’ll have to keep it.

Long block just means the engine stripped of all externals and just having the block with internals and the heads installed. Short block denotes same condition but without heads. There is no difference in the block length.

The engines are the same from 1993-1997 so everything should work you should be able to use any parts you want, the only thing that’s different is the ECM 93-OBD1
96-OBD2

Ok thanks 2trux and 99Ranger, so with that being said, I can use the 1993 motor lower and upper intake and the injectors?

----------

There’s no difference in the lower intake and injectors from the 1993 to 1997 4.0 motors?

What you should do is compare all the sensors between the two I/M [intake manifolds]. OBD II is certainly going to have either different sensors, additional, and or possibly different wiring based upon any of the aforementioned changes.

As tedious as a process as it may seem. Actually pinning out the harnesses to see if there is any differences with a DVOM would be a safe and good start.

You could possibly simplify everything and just get a new intake plenum gasket, NOT the one that goes between the heads and the lower Plenum, the one above the fuel rail, there is identical gaskets between intake and fuel spacer, and fuel spacer and lower intake plenum. You will only need one but they may be sold in pairs or single still, check local parts offerings.

You should be able to then swap the upper intake w/Injectors straight on to the lower plenum and use your original harness and skip the above pinning out of the harnesses, simplifying a lot of time and work.

The block/heads should be the same only with some slight variations in the engine mounts. For whatever reason Ford thought they needed to have that engineer do something different to explain his job and its security.

Probably the most comprehensive factoid doc you can ask for on an 4.0L OHV

http://www.therangerstation.com/how-...0l-pushrod-v6/

May answer a lot of your questions, and also good to copy and paste into a word .DOC for retaining memory
