Default Did Ford ever improve the timing tensioner failure issue beyond 2001 4.0L?

It seems like a lot of people have timing chain/tensioner issues for Ford on the 4.0 SOHC. My son has a 2001 that broke. If we were to buy a used motor for it, is there a better year out there that we wouldn't have to worry as much about this issue?

I've also read that many people say only to buy OEM Ford replacement parts. Well, if they produced it in the first place and it has issues, how is that any better?

Trying to decide whether to replace the timing chains/tensioner, etc or just put a used motor in it.

Thanks.
