Default ABS light

My ABS light comes on "sometimes" and goes out with the ignition being cycled. Got it on and went into the shop and kept it running. The tester said a code that broke to "the ABS Valve". We think that is the big assembly with the braske lines running to it.

Symptoms:

1. The rear tires lock up on hard braking and I never get a pulse in the pedal.

2. Fronts don't lock up and no pulsing.

3. Shop sells the ABS Valve and I think it was a hundred.

4. Mech told me that the rear has no ABS cause there are no sensors wired to them. He said the wires head to the fronts but he didn't do any checking. My complaint was a locking rear and he lined and drummed and bled the system so one rear no longer locks up with moderate braking.

Questions:

1. Is the ABS Valve the problem?

2. Can I rebuild the valve or clean it out?

3. Do I have front only ABS?

Many thanks,

John

Two easy ways to determine if you have ABS or RABS:

a) run the VIN through Ford etis.

https://www.etis.ford.com/

then vehicle

b) go look for the wires for the speed sensors on the front spindals

*Rear brakes don't need any type of antilock to lock, contaminated brake linings can do that.

*This mechanic is quite wrong about the situation in the rear. If you have RABS or ABS, it's one channel in the rear and the speed on top of the pumpkin on the axle.

You da man! I will check the pumpkin. Made no sense at all that the rears would not have ABS as they always loick up especially in a truck.

The left rear was locking up badly and I had him replace the lining and drums and cylinders and bleed, of course. Locking problem is gone.

Can that ABS thing with the valves and motor be rebuilt or cleaned? I suspect that bleeding would be something different. Mecxh bled the sys but assured me that getting fresh fluid into the ABS was not achieved.

Many many thanks,

John

NP, but...I still do not know if you have ABS or RABS and since there is already someone working on the vehicle, it's probably best if I don't compete. This, especially because of my earlier reading and no reply to , "Mech told me that the rear has no ABS cause there are no sensors wired to them. He said the wires head to the fronts but he didn't do any checking." Competency revelation, so I think I best step back for now.

I am the only "other mech" involved. That guy said to replace the ABS assembly BUT said that a used one from a low mileage truck would no be satisfactory. A good part is a good part and cost is the factor and reliability. That guy is a wrench to do what I no longer can but the heart Dr. is showing some progress and I may be infighting trim once again. PLEASE don't hold back O be Wan. You are my best hope. I pay that independent mech very well when I use him for a task. Even my cardio guy gets checked out with a second opinion so a mech has no beef if I check on him. I always do that at the parts stores and with another mech. everybody has been a dry well on te ABS issue, however.

I will run those numbers later today. the heat Pump is taking up all my time and energy. It is the second I installed in my life so have mastered t6he Goodman 1.5 ton single stage pump 13 seer system. As I am not as HVAC guy all the others are still a mystery to me but I am usually qualified on what I own regardless of what it is. Need info on a Lexus SC400?

NP, but still, it's unknown what you have and thus, what we are talking about (RABS/ABS). "O be Wan", sounds like something found in a back corner at the drugstore. JK.

* I do my own AC work in vehicles and houses, and I no longer own a heat pump. Charging the heat pump.......if that's the problem there should be some data tables somewhere to help with that one. It can suck getting the charge right when one only does a handful of them throughout life.

I was unable to "use" that Ford link. I got registered and everything but I can't use the parts catalog or anything else. Spent 30 min on the research. Can you help with the ABS data?

My vin no. is 1FTCR15X3TPB36570

No need to register on Ford ETIS, just use the vehicle tab then enter the VIN. And I did, and it says you have "4 Wheel Anti-Lock Braking System".

I am registered with ETIS, loaded my vin and gotten my truck "definition" including color. I somehow got into a list of ABS parts and it seems that the ECU is involved and three wheel sensors, vehicle speed and others. I guess you have gotten me to the decision point: Without further info I cannot trouble shoot and eliminate any of the components as the problem. My Lex dealer told me he would trouble shoot any problem down to the defective part and charge me 1 hour labor($89) and I thought that was a great deal. My Ford dealer charged me $130 to read the codes that the local parts store read for free and w2hile the parts store did get a code the dealer came up with nothing so 4130 FOR NADA. But the parts store says that the only code they can see breaks to the monster assembly on the top of the left fender with all the brake lines running into it. It was spendy and the clerk, a casual friend and fellow vet, told me that was more of a wag than anything. Had I not learned that there were so many other components I might have pulled the trigger for the part. I can't see any other alt than a trip to the "stealer" and get a diagnosis before I make a purchase. In many instances they told me what was wrong and also that replacing that component would only eliminate it so they wanted to Easter egg the problem and charge me for the parts and without any skin in the game I thought they would rape me on the profit motive.

I wanted to see a trouble shooting flow chart that would say things like: Did ABS light extinguish after start up? Can you feel a pulse in the pedal if you lock the wheels? Ergo it is XXXX for the problem. You know...the printed page that no longer exists.

Your help has lead to my not purchasing that module/assy in the blind while I thought the code gave me a definite failure indication.
