I am about to replace mine for the 2nd time. I finished my timing job and when I started the truck for the first time I noticed a small leak at the thermostat housing. I ordered the all aluminum one. Should be here tomorrow.

I replaced mine with the Motorcraft part a year ago, and as I was driving to work last week, the truck started overheating. I get to work and pop the hood and the housing was leaking at the seam. I found the aluminum part on partsgeek.com and ordered it. Meanwhile, I went to rent a car, I asked and am paying for an economy car to get to work and back until I can fix the truck. When the guy took me out to the lot, he asked if I would rather have a truck instead for the same price. Hell yeah! So I have been driving a 2018 F-150 for the last week. I like that truck and am thinking about trading mine in for a new F-150.

The problem with these thermostat housings is they are made out of plastic, and the actual part is made up of two separate pieces that are glued together. They are notorious for leaking at the glued seam. Plastic is fine and dandy for many things on a truck, but not where it is exposed to high temps, especially in the cooling system, where the hot coolant causes the plastic to warp. And this is why I found an aluminum part
to replace mine. The engineers at Ford need to get their act together. This damn $50 plastic part could cost someone a new engine if their thermostat housing failed and there was nowhere to pull over, it was a hot day, etc.

Anyone else have problems with the temperature sensor clips not going in? I couldn’t for the life of me get them in so I remove the new housing and tried it with the housing out of the vehicle and they still don’t go in. I’m super po’d

If they are corroded then it will be a tight fit.

Make sure the sensors themselves are pushed in all the way. Then use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to tap the clips into place.

The were all new. I tried all that. It turns out the slits for the clip were not made wide enough. I guess the guy that made the aluminum housing didn’t make them the right size. I hade to dremel them out a bit. Now it’s all good.

I’m a little late on this thread, but I’ll be replacing my thermostat housing soon and I’m think of going the aluminum route. Have you had any issues with yours, and do you recommend it? If so, could you direct me to where you purchased it from? I can’t seem to find one. Thanks!
