I think its about the same either way. you are going to have to remove the fan and shroud. The shroud is easy, but you have to remove fan and shroud at the same time, you cant get fan to clear to just pull it out. The shroud is held on by (4) 10mm bolts. To get the fan off, you need to go to Advance and get the Ford Fan Removal Tool. It consists of 1 thind big wrench and one smaller wrench that you put a socket on. The smaller one (has biger opening though) goes on the 4 bolts that hold on the waterpump pulley. The longer wrench goes on the fan shaft.:
The fan should turn of to the left like a regular bolt does if you have the 4.0 V6. now once you get the fan undone, you can pull both the fan and shroud out. now take just a reguler 3/8" drive ratchet and stick it in the little slot on the tensioner puller and pull up to relieve tension on the drive belt and remove that.
Now take the (4) 10mm bolts out of the waterpump pulley and remove. Ok here is where Im unsure of bolt sizes and such, but go ahead and undo any hoses connected to the water pump making sure to catch the fluids best you can in a bucket. then takes whatever sixe socket and remove bolts on the waterpump. Remove. now clean the surface really good. put sealant or gasket on new waterpump and put back on making sure to tighten bolts evenly around (dont tighten one down then the next---tighten a little on each bolt until they are snug, then tighten them. now put everything back.
Ive never replaced the waterpump on my v6, but i know how to do it as I dine it on my 4 cylinder. As of the moment, i have my fan and shroud off replacing front seal, so i know how to get the fan and stuff off. After you are done with removal tool just take it back...lol, Some places let you rent them (you get all you money back when you bring the tool back)
