4.0 sounds like a diesel with none of the power you would expect from one
after searching forums back over 2 years of postings and not finding my answers i decided to make my own post. I bought a 94 B4000 and looking to get it up and running properly. it eats oil, has a misfire, sounds like a diesel when warmed up, under load, and at speed, has next to no power in the top end, and has an oil saturated air filter. seafoam has been run through tank, flushed out crank, and run through throttle body. carb cleaner through purge line as per ford TSB and of course a filter and oil change.
PVC appears to be working but changing anyway as it's fairly dirty (even after soaking in carb cleaner)
first step is a compression test to see if the oil is getting past rings or valves to see it the motor is even salvageable and I'm having the truck go into my mechanic if the rings pass the compression checks to see if there is any other issues i missed.
my only concern is the amount of blow by and fumes i get from the oil fill, on my 97 Lexus i could bloody well fill it with oil whilst it was running, this sucker would shoot any attempt directly into the underside of the hood.
idles rough, runs fairly rough and as mentioned, sounds like a diesel under load
to top it off I'm thinking i might need to replace the torque converter as it shudders bad once the drivetrain locks at highway speed
i got it at a decent price though and the body and interior is absolutely cherry, zero rust on the body and not a single chip in the paint, the frame is also in good shape with the rear hangers being the worst of it but still plenty of metal left to hold it together. The truck overall handles like new and the suspension is in great shape, 4x4 works as it should and all this lets me think it's worth putting work into.
if anyone knows anything that will help me out and save me some money I would appreciate any advice i can get.
thanks heaps
