Soooo... Heads
So, the 98 ranger I just bought for $350, Needs heads or gaskets replaced. From what Ive read, the 4.0 OHV has an issue with Cyl #3 fouling plugs or cracking in the head right between the intake and exhaust valve. I kind of anticipated having todo this. When I first start the truck, it runs rough and misses for the first 3-5 mins or so, after that, its smooth sailing and you would never know there is an issue.
I know its going to be one of the two as it smokes like a freight train.
Looking at parts, i sound a set of heads, the headgasket set with head bolts and, a complete set of rockers and push rods for $500

Re: Soooo... Heads
Sorry for the cliff hangers. LOL
For now, I can only drive it till I have the funds set aside to get new heads and the gasket kit and the replacement pushrods/rockers.
Figure I would just replace everyhitng when im in there. So far, Ive replaced suspension and brake stuff. Wheels and tires also because they were free but, 20" rims off my brothers Mustang look weird on there.
Anyways, anyone doen the heads on their 4.0 OHV that has any tips or pointers on what I should do or look out for?
I did see one video where a guy had a set of bolts that he got from his Caterpillar dealer. They were a tad too long so he added a washer. This is as opposed to using the torx head bolts that will come in the kit.
----------
One question that I do have tho, are the heads universal as far as driver side and passenger side?

A bolt that was too long so he added a washer? He sounds like a hack. I wouldn't let him anywhere near my engine. Use the correct, new bolt that is proper length each time you put a head on. They need to be stretched/torque to proper spec. If you're asking if heads are universal I'd probably have some else do this job.

Re: Soooo... Heads
When a bolt is torqued, a preload is inducted it, this is why the torque is so important, the (correct) preload is there to hold things together. Without going into details about the hows and whys of how altering the physical or mechanical properties of a bolt alters preload for a given applied torque, let it be said that one of the more important bolts on a vehicle will be the head bolts. It should be clear that you want to use the correct ones for the application, not whatever fits or can be made to fit.

That was a legitimate question as some engines use a different head per side. I have had this truck for all of about 2 weeks. Thanks for your answer. You want to fly out here and do the job instead?

Noted. The bolts in question are listed in this video.
The stock bolts are M12x1.75x87mm. The bolts he used are from Caterpillar, M12x1.75x90mm. They are a higher grade steel, 10.9 where as the OEM bolts are 9.8.
Sure I could just use the stock bolts but, I havent always had luck with the TORX bits. Thats why I was asking.

You shouldn't have any issues with a correct torx bit and a new torx head bolt... I would go with what was designed for the engine. Or upgrade to arp head studes.

Re: Soooo... Heads
There's always trade-offs; with that said is worth mentioning that stronger (higher tensile strength steel), in itself, isn't always better. For example, as a general rule it's more vulnerable to developing a crack, and along with this comes the rate of crack growth, which is faster. I could bring up more, but if you're comfortable with beta testing a critical engine fastener and won't be mad if something goes wrong, then proceed. Myself, I'd stick with using what was designed for that particular application, and I'd venture a guess that in my tool box there's probably more than one torx bit that would fit the bolt head.

Re: Soooo... Heads
Thank you for the advice. I'm sure I'll just use the bolts that come in the kit. As far as the heads go, are the 4.0 ohv heads the same 0at side with the difference being the valve covers? There's a guy 30 mins fr9m me hat posted a set here but, that was a few months ago. Hope he has them as it was a pair for $150. If anything I'll grab a set I found on eBay for $300 but they are bare heads

Re: Soooo... Heads
The heads should work on either side.
