Howdy,

I have a 2000 Explorer 4.0 SOHC with about 125k on the clock. I was having some issues w/ heat/overheat, and was working on my cooling system today. I decided while I was under the hood, to bring RPMs up, to verify my coolant service/repair. Right around 2300-2500 RPM on the scan tool, a very apparent "bad" is heard. It sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine, and while I might be lucky and find out it's a trashed bearing on the idler pulley, I'm also usually not the lucky type though.

Is there any good proof positive way to verify the noise is coming from timing components? I'll probably just replace that Idler, since I have one anyway. Just curious if there's anything else I should do/could to.

No codes (occasional P0442). It runs rough, but I think that might be a vacuum leak or something similar. No codes relating to timing or misfire.

take the serpentine belt off and run it up to target rpm. Still hear the "bad"? If so it's not anything driven by drive belt.
