Default Advice on replacing PCV valve?

I have a 4.0L SOHC 2003 and am about to replace my PCV valve in the morning, any advice? I know it's got that stupid coolant line running around it, but do I need to disconnect those to get the old one out? Trying to avoid this being a whole day event. Thanks for the help in advance.

Yes it is super easy after you disconnect it. It wont spill a ton of coolant just make sure the truck is cool and not pressurized. I did it on my ST a couple months ago. I didnt know there was an OBD2 code for that.

Oh so I don't need to drain the coolant completely before disconnnecting those lines?

And the OBD II code is P0171 and P0174, the classic too lean condition. But I'm thinking it's because my PCV valve is broken off from what I can see on the back of the valve cover and is letting unmetered air in the intake. Gonna give it a shot and see if that clears the code, and if not, I'll look elsewhere

It normally is the hose for the pcv valve at the elbow that breaks

Right and that's where I started and surprisingly (knock on wood) the elbow was in good shape. But I kept following the vacuum line to the back and that's when I discovered the PCV valve itself (which is probably a decade old at least) had broken off of the valve cover. Soooo that's the first plan of action, and if I still have codes I'll inspect the vacuum lines closer

Ahh ok. I had a pcv code. When it took it off it was literately solid carbon.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's what mine looks like. So back to what you were saying earlier, I can disconnect the coolant lines without draining the coolant completely?

Yeah it drains a little coolant but it doesnt piss a gallon or anything. I just wrapped mine up around some of the other lines there

Swapped it out, bout to go test it out. Two things I noticed: First, I didn't realize how up high it mounts to the back of the motor. The old one had fallen out a while ago, and was hanging out with coolant and vacuum lines still attached down near the exhaust manifolds, about a foot lower than where I found its attaching hole. When looking around on the back of the crankcase, I was looking down there for it. Finally found it wayyyy up high on the back on the driver side. Does this sound right? Picture to follow.

Second, When I threaded the new one in, it seemed kinda loose. I remember reading on older models that there's some kind of grommet. Is it possible I'm missing this? Or maybe the thread is worn away in a bad way? Because if you look on a brand new PCV valve, it has that single spiral thread to thread it in place. And while I was able to do this, when I had the new one in place it had a good amount of wiggle room. Thoughts?
