whine when pressing gas pedal

My 2002 ford ranger has developed a whine when I press the gas, that stops when the gas pedal is released. It gets louder at highway speeds.

Any ideas? I recently had the timing chain tensions replaced as preventive maintenance.

Is the whine you because you don't want to buy gas?

Seriously though more information would be good. Like engine in your truck, transmission, is it 4x4 etc. Please give due consideration to putting this information in a decent signature. It makes it easier to help you. To be honest, the chances of someone coming along going 'whine? Well fix this!' is small.

It's a 4.0L SOHC engine. Thanks for the tip, I added the info into a sig.

the engine compartment. the front wheels squeek at low speeds, like ee ee ee ee. Could it be that?

Install a supercharger recently? Those whine at higher rpms.

Process of elimination... Will it whine if it is in park and you rev the engine?
If it does, then remove the belt and run the engine for a minute or less, If it doesn't make the noise then it is something that runs off the belt. If it still whines, then you have just ruled the engine peripherals out.
