Zip ties on the throttle cable, HID bulbs in incandescent buckets, nitrogen in tires, seafoam and full synthetic window washer fluid.

Honestly, if it was just that easy the manufacturer would have done it long before it ever rolled off the line. Really.

No choice if you want "long tube" headers on a 4.0 Ranger.

Are long tube any better than shorty? Might short be better in terms of performance and sound?

You wont find any "long tube" headers made for a 4.0 Ranger.
Even on the shorty side - You don't really have many choices. Most go with JBA's and they aren't cheap....plus, most agree not worth it.

I've got JBA's on my truck. It might've helped with sound a little bit, but the only reason I put them on we're because my stock ones had rusted a hole in them where the EGR meets the manifold. Manifolds weren't cheap from ford either, JBA's were just a tad more expensive than what ford wanted, plus they were stainless steel so I went with them instead.
Throttle body spacer won't do anything, neither will spark plugs. Ive got ported and polished heads and reground cams on my truck and that bumped me up ~30hp at best on the 93 octane tune.
Save your money and get a supercharger kit.

Re: 4.0 1/4 mile
Tuner, that one is old news, ignored or rejected.
