Default '04 SOHC ticking on startup, idle, and under load

Hey everyone, my 4.0 has had a tick for the past month or so, weather is just getting good so that I can try to diagnose this. Figured you guys may be able to help me. The noise sounds more like a ticking than the timing chain rattle we all fear. Here, I have a video from my first start-up this morning, and another 30 second clip of my truck running shot about a minute after the end of the first.

Startup video:

Second video:

One thing I do notice is that if I rev the truck in park, the noise disappears, however when driving the noise increases in sync with the RPM, getting louder and more rapid. Am I correct in thinking that this is something to do with the exhaust manifold? The noise does appear to be coming from the passengers side, down lower on the engine.

From listening to youtube videos of both exhaust manifold leaks and timing rattles, the noise appears closer to a manifold issue.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

The noise is unclear for me using my lap top audio.

If you cannot see any black soot around either of the manifold or flanges use a mechanics stethoscope to try and pin point the noise.

You could use a long screwdriver holding your ear up to the handle while holding the tip on the area of concern.yet it may prove to be hard on your neck.

If you suspect the noise may be a internal engine noise, how many miles do you have on the engine? what weight oil do you use?

I use 5w30 full synthetic, and around 130k miles. I had my spark plugs all changed at the beginning of february, and when I looked this morning, plug boot 1 is sooty black, while 2 and 3 are still their original grey.

----------

I have a mechanics stethoscope, but it's difficult to get a good view/angle on what I'm locked onto with it past all of the hoses on that side of the engine

have you checked the spark plugs when the engine is cold. perhaps one has backed out some.

Exhaust issue for sure. Timing chain is more of a metallic sound.

I thought about that but didn't check. Wouldn't a backed out plug cause a misfire (and a CEL), or not every time? Would a backed out plug cause the noise I'm hearing?

If you have a loose spark plug that is leaking some of the spent exhaust it will not cause a check engine light unless it spits the plug out completely or you loose enough compression.

If you do find the plug is loose, pull it out all the way and clean the threads. If you have aluminum heads put a little anti seize on the threads as well.

A loose plug would be the easiest thing to be wrong with the truck and should only take a few minutes to check.

Fuel injectors make one heck of a ticking noise on mine.

4.0s generally don't have valvetrain noise issues, other than the timing chain rattle. The lash adjusters are oil fed along with roller followers under the cams, so the cam is in indirect contact with the valves at all times pretty much. With an over engineered oiling system (there is an actual bar that showers the entire camshaft in oil) there shouldn't be any reason for a noisy valvetrain in a 4.0.

What miles are on it? Mine has 125k on it, replaced the rear tensioner even after full syn oil changes it cut all the noise out of the motor. But that sounds like a leak at the header. Just my two cents

130k miles, due for an oil change this weekend.

Come listen to mine when you're bored. It's loud with brand new chains and guides, front and rear.
