SOHC lower oil pan
Hi all,
I'm working on an oil leak on my 2wd 4.0 SOHC 2002 Ranger. I have confirmed the leak is from the lower oil pan gasket. I tried to do the swap today but I can't find anyway to reach the front 3 bolts. Everything I've found on the internetz says it is a simple job that doesn't require lifting the engine but I just don't see how. Can someone give me a hint on what I'm missing?
Thanks guys

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
Lower oil pan only takes 5 minutes. The upper is a bit time consuming.

Perhaps a pic would help?

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
that's what everybody says...but I can't get to the front 3 bolts, there isn't enough space between the cross member and the oil pan for my hand to get through, much less a wrench

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
Maybe it's a 2wd thing. On my 4wd, it only took me 5 minutes to get it off, clean the old pan off in the parts washer, and have the new gasket and pan back on.
If you can take a picture of the bolts on it that are fighting you, I can offer some insight.

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
thanks. I can't even begin to see the bolts to take a picture of them . I'm thinking I ma going to have to loosen the mounts and lift the engine

Take a picture of the underneath of your truck where the oil pan is.
----------
This is the lower oil pan. The crossmember shouldn't be in the way cause its not on a 4wd...

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
that's exactly the pan I'm talking about, but my front cross member is a big box about where that tube is in the picture with barely enough room to slide the flat of my hand between the cross member and the oil pan.
lemme see what I can do about a picture.

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
Oooohhhhh.....I know why now. It's because you have coil springs and not torsion bars.

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
You may have to lift the engine. I don't have much experience with the 2wds.

Re: SOHC lower oil pan
I gave up and checked a local shop and they'd do the job for under $250, including an oil change...I guess that is better than spending all weekend doing the job without an engine hoist.
It looks like this may be the one maintenance job that is easier on a 4x4 than a 2x4
