Default Jerking when in high gear??

Hello,

My 97 ranger 4x4 auto 4.0L just starting having this issue:

At high speeds, 65-75mph when lightly accellerating there is a series of jerks, about 4 or 5. Like I loose power for a seccond. This happens more so when going up a hill.

No check engine lights, no codes. There is a mild clunck sometimes when accellerating from a stop, but not always. This got me thinking it was the slip yoke, but I don't know if the 97 has a slip yoke, or if it could be this severe.

Just for reference the head gasket, speed sensor, spark plugs, and maf where changed about 500 miles before this started to occur.

Any help would be great!!!

Just as a shot in the dark try turning off the overdrive in this situation as a test.

Does the mild clunk also sometimes happen when engaging drive or reverse?
It might be harmless backlash in the rearend and I don't think it's related.

Overdrive has no difference.

It doesen't really have the mild clunk when enganging drive or reverse. Maybe once every 15-20 times.

Theres no hum, so I don't think its a transfer case or rear end. And no cel's, so I don't think the engine is missing.

BoosTT my 4.0 has been doing this for awhile also, still have not figured out what the issue is yet. My next step is to replace the fuel injectors and see what that does. I have 200,000 on the original 19lb injectors, plus mine is supercharged and when I boost the pressure goes up to 50lbs of pressure on the injector. I am thinking the injectors are just wore out. It only does it in overdrive when pulling a slight incline before the transmission down shifts. Once it down shifts it smooth. Which lends me to believe the wider pulse width being sent to the injectors hides the issue. I have no CEL from the computer. either. I will let you know if this resolves the issue.

What's that yoke thing on the driveshaft? I'm having a brainfart on the name. It will do that when it needs to be greased or something like that. I don't know much about the part but I've read this problem before and that was the culprit.

^^slip yoke
Could be some crap in your fuel filter/lines, my bro's expo was doing that, and we r&r'd his fuel filter and seafoamed it, and it resolved, at least so far as I know.

If anybody comes up with a solution, let me know. My 4.0 sohc is fine on the highway, but when in town and it shifts into high about 1800 rpms under light load, it feels like it is cutting out but doesn't do it when under load. I replace fuel filter, cleaned the MAS and the throttle body, replaced plug wires and it still does it. Help!!!
