Default Reluctant to start after a short trip

I have a 2000 4 liter with 220K and an auto trans. I'll drive maybe 6 miles to a gas station, stop the engine to add fuel and when I go to restart, the engine does not want to start. It cranks and cranks. If I pump the accelerator petal, it then starts but stalls when I put it into gear. This happens about 3-4 times until I can get it going. Anyone have any idea what this could be? Once I get it going it seems ok, it's very drive able until I shut the engine off, then it does it all over again.

start with a fuel pressure test

Just some additional info.. I do not drive this truck much. I originally thought it might have gotten water in the fuel so I added a can of drygas and a little later a can of Seafoam. 2 days ago I drove to the gas station (6 miles) and filled up. I drove back and when I arrived I shut the truck off, and immediately attempted to start it. It cranked over rapidly but no start.

I drove it over to my cousins, he has a OBD2 sensor and it picked up a "low coolant temperature" code. Since the truck was warm, that was odd. I'm going to pull the coolant temp sensor wire and see if it needs cleaning and put it back on. If that does not work, a new coolant temp sensor is in my future. It's right at the front of the intake manifold, so it's not hard to get to.

When I drove to my cousins I shut it off, and tried to restart it. It spun over but did not want to catch. I had to put the petal to the floor and Dave noticed black smoke out of the exhaust when it finally started running. This is an indication of richness to me. I bought a new engine coolant temp sensor (ECTS) and installed it. Drove it again and no change. Would any of you know of another ECTS on this truck? The one I replaced was on the intake manifold near the front.

I forgot to add that the "check engine" light is on now.

Well, now I found out about what is called a "fuel injection damper" located on top of the intake manifold right behind the temp sensor I just replaced. I have ordered another one, but there is a stainless steel looking hose with a crimped connector going into the top of this damper. How do you get this line off the damper to transfer it to the new one? This unit seems to have a diaphragm in it that ruptures and allows too much fuel into the engine.

Well, the part arrived but I still need to know what to do with the braided steel line with the crimped fitting going to the top of the damper. I suspect that is a fuel line. How can I transfer this line to the new part?

Just curious, why did you order a fuel injection damper? How do you know the old ones bad, and also that doesn't regulate fuel pressure.. What was your fuel pressure readings after testing it?
