Great information on this thread. I just bought an 08 Ranger 4X4 4.0L last October with 80,000 miles. Last week, I heard the rattle for the first time. It only happens occasionally, from a cold start when it's been sitting overnight, and lasts less than a second. I guess I should just go ahead and replace the tensioners to nip any problems in the bud?

Yes. Service interval is 70,000 miles or less. There are someone here who runs a preoiler which will pump oil to them before you start the truck just in case. If I let my truck sit for more that 2-3 days at a time I'll trip the fuel pump inertia switch and just crank the engine over for a few seconds to let oil get to everything, reset the inertia switch, and no rattle. Also, remember to only buy the ford ones.

Looks like the latest MC part number for the intake gaskets for an 04 MY is 4L2Z9461BA. Confirmed by multiple online sources local Ford dealer and Tasca.

I am going to look at a 2010 explorer tomorrow and after looking at all the Explorer forums for info on it, I came back here and found what I was looking for. I love this place.

Depends on a lot of things. Which timing chain and guides did you change? There are three of them. If you never changed the black plunger tensioners that were mentioned then that's probably the source of your problems. Also, it depends on the quality of the timing kit.

I'm doing all the timing chains on my 03 4x4 ranger. Back is done, having trouble getting the front left cassette out. The pivot point seems to be catching on the bottom edge of the head and won't come out. Anybody know any tricks?

Plus either mine is a bastard or someone put in a different engine. It has no balance shaft.

Why doesn't Ford include the washers when you buy their tensioners? I just got done replacing front and rear tensioners and the rear one leaks really bad when the engine runs. So I ordered a washer today and hopefully that fixes the leak.

When I removed the old tensioners (which were aftermarket and not Ford brand), neither of them had a washer so I thought it wasn't necessary. Does the front tensioner need a washer too?

Yes. They both need washers. They are very thin so when you remove them they are hard to see cuz they are stuck to the tensioner

Well I only ordered 1 washer and installed it on the rear tensioner. No more leaks and thankfully no more chain rattle on startup. The front tensioner does not have a washer and isn't leaking. I read somewhere that only the rear needs a washer. Maybe the front does too but mine doesn't have one and isn't leaking.

Also, I double checked and made sure there was no washer on the old rear tensioner. I think whether you need the washer or not depends on if you use an aftermarket tensioner. At least for the Ford tensioners you definitely need one for the rear and not for the front.

My front tensioner started to leak oil really bad this week. I'm not sure why it took a month for it to start leaking. Usually something is either leaking or it's not.

So I ordered the second washer. I'm going to murder Ford for not including this fukcing washer when you buy their tensioners. I spent about 8 hours taking everything apart and replacing the tensioner/thermostat housing the first time. It should go faster this time around but what a pain in the ass job this is not to mention I have to buy more oil as well since I've pissed out about 1.5 liters driving around. FUCK YOU FORD.

For anyone doing this job, do not replace the tensioners without washers on both the front and rear like kgo5xd said.

This is an amazing thread! I have a 2011 4.0 that has a fast ticking noise between 2800-3000rpm only right after starting and getting on it on an on ramp for the freeway. After driving for a while and getting the engine warmed up it does not do it anymore. It is most noticeable from 1st to second and second to third just the first couple of times accelerating. Would this be a symptom of the same kind of issues? More importantly would it possibly be something as simple as replacing the tensioners you posted pictures of? I don't know a whole lot about cars but I am kind of learning this stuff as I try to keep the ranger running.

The rattle on startup came back shortly after I replaced the tensioners.

It persists to this day. Specifically, it happens when the truck sits for more than 2 days. Less than 2 days and I can't hear any rattle on startup.

It only happens for less than a second on startup. Leads me to believe that is the front timing chain guides.

Does it harm the engine? Can I leave it as is or should I start planning on replacing the guides?

Some of the cheaper oil filters have crappy anti drain back valves in them resulting in cold start up noises. What filter are you using.
Rattling from the timing chain guides is never a good thing.
