Always a good idea. I have a complete set for everything I own, even one for my Mustang. It's just for keeping...

That or alldata works well. When I was doing it, the best information I came by was the links in included in the original post.

Thanks for doing that write up, that was very helpful.
Ford really screwed a lot of people over on that one by not taking accountability for their actions and fixing what is clearly a factory defect.
At the very least they could have told the customers that those tensioners needed to be replaced at 70K miles.

Well, it is something ford is supposed to replace whenever they see the vehicle is over 70k. If I remember correctly there is a little side note in alldata about it. They did improve the system after 2004 which is much beefier, but if you don't replace the tensioners, it won't matter how strong the part is, the chain is going to break it.

I was really shocked when I got a early 2004 (117K on the clock) with that problem because most of the engines that have this problem are 2002 and older but you could tell the guy didn't do any preventive maintenance on the truck and these engines are oil sensitive.
And on a side note, the truck is from Lincolnton, NC ... I thought that was kinda ironic.

Hahah yeah that's just right up the road from me. There's discrepancies as to when they updated the parts. Some say 2003 was the first year of the new parts, some say it wasn't until late 04 early 05 until they arrived. I know one thing for sure, if the guides are green/white/yellow in color, they're the updated parts. If they're brown/black/burgundy they're the outdated set.

Cloyes finally posted a How-To video on YouTube on how to install this kit.
It's the first video that really shows you how to do this and isn't in Spanish.
The kit they installed is 9-0398SB for a 4X4 with the balance shaft. My 2004 is a 2WD, so I'm just wondering if they offer a kit with less parts for a 2WD.

Hey guys,

Maybe you can help me understand this a little better. On the video he says to torque the rear camshaft 19 mm sprocket bolt to 63 ft. pounds if you're directly on the bolt with the older style needle type of torque wrench, but if you you're using the special OTC extension tool then just torque it down to 45 ft pounds. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems like you would have to apply more torque to the bolt if you are using the special extension tool. I have to use the special tool because I only have the click type torque wrench that will only tighten up right hand thread bolts.

It's less torque because it's extending the point at which the driver is twisting on the bolt. Torque=ft*force, so the farther away from the bolt, the more torque is applied. Therefore, if you applied the 63 ft. Lbs of torque to the tool, the tool would probably apply somewhere in the neighborhood of 85-90 ft lbs. Did you put loftier on the bolt? And are you using the OTC tool to hold the cams in place?

----------

And are you sure yours won't tighten in reverse threads? Mine did.

Hey Al,

Thanks for clearing that up. I just finished doing the work on the engine and it was very frustrating to say the least. I ended up timing the cams like 4 times. Needless to say "Murphy's Law" kicked it full force when doing this job. It's easy to have this engine 180 out even with using the special OTC tools. They have a nub on the driver's side came that is sticking straight up when the engine is at TDC but there's not much to go by on the passenger side cam.
I only fixed the back timing chain guide because that was the only one that was broken.
That TTY T-55 bolt that holds the rear jackshaft sprocket on ended up costing me $15.10 at the Ford stealership. Then that little plug that covers the bolt up was $16.57 on Amazon. It blows me away at how expensive these little parts are.
They say to torque that bolt down to 15 ft. lbs. and then turn it an additional 90 degrees, but my torque wrench only goes down to 25 ft. lbs. I torqued it down to 25 lbs. and then only turned it 70 degree. I know that's taking a chance, but the bolt didn't break off.
I really hope this takes care of the death rattle.

No problem. I wish I would've known that you bought parts from ford. I woulda told you to go to http://www.tascaparts.com/ to get what you need. It's genuine ford parts, but I think they sell them at employee price, because when I bough stuff from them it was significantly cheaper than from ford parts website.

Thanks for the tip, from now on I'll buy from Tasca. I noticed that those two parts were made in Spain. I think most of the other part are made in Germany because the engine was built in Cologne, Germany.

Yeah I had noticed that most of the parts were made in Germany, which makes sense.
