The truck has 160,000 miles on it. I didn't own it at 70,000. Assuming they were changed around that time, then I'm 20,000 miles overdue. So far, I've only got the rattle at start up, so I'm thinking it's the pre tensioners, but it very well could be a bigger issue. I already have the tensioners, so I figure I don't really have much to loose by changing them. Best case, my rattle goes away. Worst case, I'm at the same place I am now.
Back to my original question; do you know if you need to prime the pre tensioners before instal?

You don't have to. I didn't.

Get the ford ones. You shouldn't have to prime them. You're most likely going to have to pull the top of the thermostat housing off to get to the tensioner. If it continues its MOST LIKELY the front chain that goes from the crank to the jackshaft.

They still use the pre tensioners so it is very possible. Until you hear the noise I wouldn't worry about it.

They updated the guides in mid 03, so you are better off over the older trucks. I would still replace the timing chain tensioners at 70k latest. My dads 07 only has 30k on it but I plan on doing it in the next few months due to age.

for what its worth, I bought my first ranger, a 2002, in 2004 with 32k miles on it. It started making the dreaded timing chain rattle between 2-3k rpms at 45k in 2005.

Replaced both tensioners today. Lower one was a piece of cake, upper was a complete pain in the ass. There is just no room up there. Got the new tensioner in, but broke a thermostat housing bolt in the process. So I'll have to deal with that tomorrow.

How's the timing chain noise now?

When you say lower are you talking about the one underneath the timing cover?

Naw, I meant the one for the rear chain.

If it's still making noise it's most likely the primary chain. Next thing I'd do is open the front cover and inspect the components inside.
