Default 4.0 Engine Trouble Codes

I have had 2 engine codes for over 2 years now and no one has been able to find the problem. P0171 & P0174 System Too Lean Banks 1 & 2 continue to plague me.

It has recently been suggested that perhaps a weak fuel pump might be the culprit but it is also an expensive and big job to do just to see if it may cure the trouble codes. Before I investigate this remedy any further, do any of you folks have any other ideas about what may cause these codes?

Cleaned injectors many times.
Changed fuel filter.
Changed Air Idle Valve.
Changed DPFE.
Changed O2 Sensors.
Changed spark plugs.

I got these codes to. Which O2 Sensors did you replace? There is 4. I haven't done anything, but a vacuum leak would be probable as well so I've been told.

First check the rubber elbows on the PCV line. It goes from the back of the drivers side valve cover to just under the TB on the passenger side. Those elbows crack easily and throw those codes.

P0171and p0174 are not caused by faulty o2 sensors. it is the opposite. the o2 sensors are working and doing there job and reporting the condition. I agree with VROd check that elbow and other hoses for a vacuum leak. I have also read that some of these 4.0 can have fault intake manifolds gasket? and thus throw these codes. do a search!!!

Those codes could be throw by weak fuel pressure. You proably would get some good symptoms though. my guess is a vauum leak, the elbos or the gaskets

More info:

1998 XLT 4x4 w/manual trans, 210k miles

PCV hose is "s" shaped with 1/2 twist and goes from PCV LR valve cover to LR intake plenum. Could not find a crack. Checked hose from bottom of Throttle Body and could not find a crack. Oil breather hose is also good. Have sprayed carb cleaner all around intake gaskets and no leak detected. Reset check engine light and came back on after 15 miles.

Change your fuel filter an do a fuel pressure test if you can, however it is probably your intake manifild gaskets Do a search for that

As stated earlier, fuel filter has been changed and can find no evidence of a vacuum leak. I certainly can change the gaskets for sh1ts & giggles, especially the plenum gasket, but going down to the intake manifold to cylinder head gaskets will require considerably more effort. What is the object connected to a vacuum hose running from the bottom of the TB? It looks something like a divers regulator and is mounted on the side of the ASB unit just forward of the master cylinder. The vacuum hose has a plastic 90 degree elbow about in the middle and the elbow has a plastic "wing" or tab sticking off the back of it.

The photo below shows a different engine set-up but the object I am talking about is forward of and to the right of the master cylinder and attached with the cad plated "gold" nut. Just to the right of the clutch slave cylinder reservoir.

I forget the exact name bit it is something like the evap cannister purge valve the other hose from it should go back to the evap cannister above the spare tire

I looked the part up on rockauto for you it is called "vapor cannister purge solenoid"

I assumed( I know never assume) when you had those codes you had a 4.0 sohc. I did not see that you have a 1998, my bad. scratch the intake man gaskets off the list.

imho, the mostly likely causes of your issues are
-Vacuum leak, as suggested already, ie elbows(You can rent a smoke machine)
-fuel pressure 210k miles?( i bought a tester at harbor freight for $20 that works)
-MAF( clean with crc maf cleaner or equivalent)

*also since changing the fuel filter have you erased the codes and or reset the pcm?you should run some techron thru it also!

I have reset the CEL many times. Lasts about 15 miles until it returns. My truck does not have the elbow that is such as major problem on other models. Have cleaned the MAF. I wonder if plugging the vacuum hose to the vapor canister purge solenoid might tell me if that might be where my problems is. I cannot find any other intake leaks.

After more troubleshooting finally found that fuel pressure is only 35psi at the rail. Much to my dismay, will drop fuel tank and replace fuel pump/regulator/float assy. Hoping that this will fianlly clear this problem.
