Default 1999 Ranger 6 Cyl 4.0 L 4x4 Stalling Out

I need some help from someone who knows a thing or two.
My 1999 ranger (6cyl 4.0 liter 4X4 automatic) starts up okay, but idles rough fluctuating btw. 900 and 1500rpm. This is when I have my MAF sensor unplugged. It used to stall out periodically with the MAF plugged in but now it immediately stalls out after startup. I have to unplug the MAF just to keep it running every now and then but now it will stall out occasionally when I let on the gas pedal. WTF? I have tried replacing the MAF but the brand new MAF seemed to make things worse. I put the old MAF back in because I wanted to keep my truck running every couple of days but I didn't want to ruin the brand new MAF sensor I bought. I have also tried spraying the hell out of the engine with carb & choke cleaner to check for vacuum leaks. I can not find any vacuum leaks. I am running out of hope and I need some advice.

It also makes a high-pitched whining noise at idle while it is warming up if that means anything, but I haven't been worried about that because it had been going on for a while and never seemed to affect the ranger's performance. The noise is so loud with my hood up that I can't seem to pinpoint it.

Check the all vacuum lines, and what other symptoms are you having? Any popping/backfiring? Throttle response? How any miles on the engine? Any smoke from the exhaust? Also pull the plugs and check them for burnt oil.

For your stalling problem pull the idle air control off & clean it, I had that same problem with my last 2000 Ranger 4.0 & the 4.0 in my wife's old 99 Explorer Sport & both times it cured the stalling problem. That is what I would try first. The whining noise could be the P/S pump, Ford p/s pump are known for making noise. Also check the p/s fluid level it could be low causing the noise.

Also have you ever run sea foam through it? I did on my old 99 and it worked so well it completely clogged my cats and cause the engine to have no power unless I was to the floor. Luckily being in the south there's darn near no emissions testing so I cut em off and fixed the problem. (Exhaust sounded sweet too )

Wow I didn't expect so many responses. I haven't noticed any other symptoms besides the stalling and the whining. The idle has been rough for a while it fluctuates from about 900rpm to 1500rpm while its running. I was never comfortable with that, but it's not priority right now. My mechanic buddy from the company I work for says that my valves are leaking because there is some greasy gunk slowly running out of my engine, but that's a whole different issue. The engine has maybe 125,000 miles.

I think I might have cleaned the IAC once before but I'll try it again. I look into the p/s pump? I'm new at this wrenchin' think so I'm kinda learnin as I go.

I have run sea foam through it the tard at autozone recommended it ha. It was stalling before I put the sea foam through. I've also run Gunk or something like that through the fuel system. At first I thought it was stalling due to water in the fuel and bad gas. It did seem to help get the water out of my system. When you say cats do you mean catalytic converters?

I was talking with my mechanic buddy at work this past Friday and he told me to check the four wheel drive. He says when the truck was new the hubs could automatically switch from "free" to "lock." He says that wherever that part is or whatever it's called, that there is a vacuum line that may have broke off and I gotta try and find it and pinch it off. It would help if I knew what the part was called.

I really appreciate your time brothers, I've got time today to mess around with it a bit. Check back with yunz later.

Have you tried replaceing the fuel filter? besides it runing rough before your filter maybe was due to be change, and after running all that crap in it, it clogged the filter even moore. I had a friend put a new fuel pump in his, turned out he didn't need it, and failed to check and change filter.and the old filter was so clogged it blew the new pump apart.

Oh and by the way.. no the whining is not my power steering pump.. I flushed my power steering fluid a few months ago because it was whining and seemed simple to do.. I struggled like hell to get that hose off around the cooler though. I think I slowly twisted and pulled for an hour and a half in the middle of winter at night. The whining quieted after the air finally left the system.

This noise could be described better as a squealing or whistling. It is very loud and it echos around which makes it hard to pinpoint. I think it is on the right or passenger side of my engine, but I am not sure.

Yes I put a new fuel filter in it a couple months ago.. seemed better at first but the same old problem came back. The only thing that worried me was that I had that brand new filter sit for about a year in my truck because I couldn't find a tool that would get my fuel lines off for a good while. I doubted that would be an issue but I'm not completely sure.. I ain't a Ranger guru.. yet.

Have you ever thought of just changing the plugs and maybe the wires?

Remove the air intake tube at the throttle body and start the truck and with it running use a flashlight and using carb cleaner look for the small sensor located on the side of the throttle body going to the intake and spray the sensor. Be prepared the engine will shake like the devil but it will smooth out do this a least 2-3 times. I had this problem and after replacing misc parts a friend showed me the cleaning the sensor. Also replace the fuel filter again and add Lucas Ethanol Conditioner as well as their fuel injector cleaner. Fuel today has at least 10% ethanol which just kills a fuel system and parts. Be sure and let us know what the problem ends up being. But I do believe it is fuel related as well as that dirty sensor. Of course the intake tube going to the throttle body has the sticker that says ( To Be Removed By Trained Technician ) or some such warning. This is so you will take it to the dealership where they will charge you $107.00 per hour t diagnos and fix he problem.
