Default 02 4.0 hard to start when warm

Hey everyone My Grandpas 02 ranger has been hard to start when warm for a while now. I have to pump the gas to make it start when warm like you would when you coldstart a carbd vehicle. It runs fine after it starts. There is no CEL on.

Any suggestions of what it could be?

I'll post a video of what its doing if what i said doesn't make sense.

Truck is a 02 xlt, 4.0 auto 2wd

does it still do it if you cycle the key a few times prior to cranking?

I don't know I didn't try that.

----------

Would that see if there was something wrong with the fuel pump?

yea that would either A. rule out fuel pump or B. make the fuel pump a smoking gun

Update, still does the same thing it does in the video even when you cycle the key on and off a few times before cranking.

My 05 xlt does the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure it is the fuel pump as I can hear it whining. I have just got a new pump filter and I am just waiting to get a day off and some decent weather to get it swapped. I don't know about his but mine is worse once I get below half a tank of gas. If it really struggles to start it seem to be down on power and have horrible throttle response. I also will be replacing the plugs, wires and coil to eliminate any ignition issues and I figure an ignition tune up cannt hurt.

Back to the OP's issue, what happens if instead of pumping you hold the pedal to the floor when cranking the warm engine?

My 00 Ranger 3.0 had the same exact issue where it would not start when warm, unless depressed gas pedal. It also had an eratic idle once it started.
Posting the fix that worked for me here.
As with previous posts there were no codes and everything with pump checked out etc, cleaned MAF and changed throttle position sensor. This fixed the erratic idle but still did not solve the warm starting. Since it seems to be triggered by temperature, I changed the "Coolant Temperature sensor" (19 bucks from NAPA) and that solved the issue.
All good now, starts right up.
