Default No high idle when cold start

2002 Ranger 4.0 5spd in the mornings when its cold it doesn't idle high.. When it firsts starts it'll rev up to about 2000-2500 rpms then drop to about a 1000rpms..

Every over Ranger I have owned or driven idle kinda high when you first start it cold...

Doesn't really bother me but it would be nice if it did idle high in the mornings...

2500 is high for idle. My 2.3 idles around 1900 or 2000 when I first start in in the morning

Tap the gas if it doesn't go into a high idle at first, that force it to go into the cold start idle

That's how it's supposed to operate, it's set up like this for emissions reasons. The idea is for the engine management system to go into closed loop (ie, use O2 sensor data, more precise) as quickly as possible rather than rely on boilerplate open loop defaults (not as precise) for establishing the fuel/air mixture.

Your current one is idling "kinda high" when you first start it. But and again, it's calibrated to not need to linger in high a high idle for prolonged amounts of time, as opposed to older vehicles with FI or worse yet, a carb. Also, you're in GA where it doesn't get very cold; if you were to go out and start your current Ranger at -10F it would probably idle "kinda high" for about 30 seconds, maybe a little bit more, then back off.

Why? There is no need for it. .gov likes clean air. This things happen when there are overpopulation issues. Also, thanks to more precise air/fuel ratio management, think about how longggggg your cats are going to last since they don't have to mop up as much hydrocarbons as the old vehicles used to dump in them.
