Lifters Clicking Sound
Ok, might be only me because i'm not used to it, but on my cars, when you heard the lifters it was a bad thing (ie: bad maintenance, bad use, etc), but this 4.0l ranger is only one week and 3 days old...
It's not a loud noise like when you "forget" to put in 3 liters of oil (or when you listen to every jdm pos on the road), but its loud enough for me to notice and get concerned.
So i was wondering, before i go to my appointment at the dealership, is it normal that the engine sounds like that?

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
The dealership hasn't told me anything about the truck, fuck i don't even have a redline on the tach, and 36k might be in 4 years if i base it on my old car's mileage...lol
So there's a break in period?

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
I can hear my lifters too. Always have. From startup on. Like an mechanical kitchen timer.
You know, it is a quiet engine in all other aspects. Hell I always put in higher octane gas, and I recently keep hearing that it's supposed to just run on ~87...

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
lol yeah it's awesome like that, made to run on cheap gas. When i filled up the hybrid escape, the manual said to put in cheap gas too, gotta love ford!
thanks for the replies guys, if i don't have lifters, i'll guess i'll just yell at my service guy till he finds it.

I've had my "Valve Covers" off, and there is something looks like "lifters" that move... and those do click even on mine... it sounds less like a clicking sound, and more of a tapping sound at start up...

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
the clicking sound seems to have grown louder, and now there's a weird sound in first gear, as if my drive shaft wasn't greased enough, thank god for the appointment this week.

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
OK Ranger EDGE cam followers/lifters. Ta-may-toe - ta-mah-toe. And thanks for the diagram.
Either way they're hydrolic. No? So I do have to wonder if the more "runny" synthetic oil will allow them to lose pressure more easily.

All our trucks and basically all normal vehicles on the road are designed for 87. Only high performance vehicles with high compression engines will spec higher octane fuel.
And it has NOTHING to with quality. Octane serves a specific purpose and it has nothing to do with the quality of the fuel. Using a fuel with an octane rating outside that of the design spec will do nothing but CAUSE PROBLEMS.

Re: Lifters Clicking Sound
Update!
I went to the dealership, they checked my engine / transmission and said everything was fine. In fact, they had just received a statement by Ford saying that several clients might come in to inquire about the loud v6, which is a characteristic of the latest 4.0l in production.
