Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
I still say if those are accurate compression numbers, you're looking at a mechanical problem, not a sensor or computer. Electronics don't have any bearing on compression.

Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
After we did the heads and a valve job and put it back together it still did the same thing. Heads were cracked. So we tore the bottom apart. Rings check out fine. Mechanically it is perfect.

Its in time. It didn't jump. Cam is fine

It's not because you have such low compression

Everything has been checked in the engine

It's not electronic. That's a bet Leak down test time
In fords eyes anything under 100psi of compression is a fail

Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
This engine needs to go to a machine shop if you want it to work properly. Needs to be honed at the minimum, possibly bored and honed, possibly new oversized pistons. Camshaft needs to be measured for excessive wear, block needs to be decked, heads probably need to be resurfaced, needs a new timing chain, etc.
Clearly whoever is working on this doesn't know the fundamentals of rebuilding an engine properly.

^^^ all of this.
Your engine will most likely have to come out and come back apart and be rebuilt. Low compression cannot be fixed without the engine coming apart.

Since you obviously know everything is alright, why won't the truck start?

Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
Whose to say he even did the compression test right. He never specified if it was a running compression reading, a wet compression test, or a dry compression test. The numbers WILL be different on all 3.

Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
Already been tore apart. Its at my brothers shop. Weve taken it apart multiple time, there is nothing wrong with the engine itself. Poured transmission fluid in each cylinder, Didn't leak down over night, not a drop. Its being worked on by professionals. You know, those people that do this everyday and not sit on the computer and act like they know everything. This was a complete waste of time. The engine has been torn apart 3 times, there is nothing wrong with it. Arguing with me about what's been done gets me nowhere, used 2 different compression gauges. Both say the same damn thing.

Re: 98 ranger sohc won't run
Not arguing. It's just been pointed out on MULTIPLE occasions that the only thing that will cause a low compression reading on a properly conducted test, with a properly functioning compression gauge is in fact, a MECHANICAL problem with the engine. Not electrical, not fuel delivery, an internal mechanical problem to the engine.
I can say that safely, either you either are not conducting these tests properly, or you guys don't understand the fundamentals of diagnosing low compression or basic engine repair.
I don't know anything though, I just do this for a living.

I would question the mechanics who rebuilt it. A fresh 4.0 should be well north of 130.

Are these the same professionals that dud not know if they were working on a OHV OR A SOHC?
These pros rebuilt it 3 times and can't get the compression over 100?
These pros should have just dropped in a used motor. They are cheap.
Yawn yawn!
