Default tapping sound under the hood?

I recently begin to hear a knocking sound at idle when the truck is started, under the hood. It goes away after driving, and it doesn't always knock, it doesn't seem to matter if its cold or warm. Sounds like a lifter on the passenger side, but you can hear it with the windows rolled up.

Any ideas?

Oil is fine, in fact just did a change thinking it would rid of the sound. If its the lifters, I haven't noted any performance loss, and as I said it isn't always there, sometimes when I start the truck after its sit for a minute or so, I'll hear it, other times I can start it up, and its fine. My truck isn't even missing, or nothing that I can tell. I had a Taurus 3.0L that had a headgasket gone, and it'd cause the lifters to knock really bad, and it would cause my car to miss fire, this thing doesn't even seem like its all the lifters, but maybe one. Can they be adjusted or what?

I have the same thing on 2.5L until it warms up. From previous experience, the brand of oil can make a difference believe it or not. One brand is more prone to it than others depending on what your engine likes. You may have to experiment a little to see which ones will work best for your engine. It's kinda like a firearm, each one has it's "preference" on what it will shoot best with.

Is your oil pressure up?
Check for an exhaust leak at the manifold.

Seems to be fine. I just changed the oil, been using Mobile 1 Synthetic Truck and SUV since I got the truck. Doesn't seem to be an exhaust leak that I can tell..

Its a SOHC, 2004 Ford Ranger.

And stupid Question, What is the Hamster Wheel? Oh god im gonna regret this!

I have it at start up but it doesnt seem to be harming the performance until I run for a longtime at 70. When i slow down it feels like im losing spark.

I have a 4.0 OHV with the same annoying sound. Tried everything, went everywhere, and no one could figure it out. Finally picked up a can of Sea Foam Spray carb-cleaner, and right into the throttle body it goes. Make sure you pass by the butter-fly and keep the rpms up to 3500 to 4000 while spraying.
Worked like a charm. Less than $10.00.
regards,
MT
