Whats could be the problem? pix inside
Hello guys, well today my truck started stumbling real bad on idle.. I took a look at the spark plugs, which I replace maybe about 7 months ago, they are NASTY! look at the pics! Oh yea and its consuming 1qt of oil in less than 500 miles!! Valve Stem Guides is the first thing that came to mind...what do yall think?, I just want to be sure of what the problem is.. 4 of them looked like these, the other 2 looked perfect. Sorry bout the pic quality, there from phone cam.

valve stems could be the problem, but they leak oil when its not running or when you shift. It could be worn rings, or both if your unlucky. How many miles you got on it?

I would lean more towards piston rings
Need to pull the head off and look at the cylinder's that those plugs were on

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
It has aprox 90k on it.. I replaced head gaskets not too long ago, I dont have coolant loss or overheating problems at all.. It consumes oil like crazy! And saw a little cloud of smoke on start up and when reving the engine.. Im thinking of running it till it cant no more and just replace engine. Damit...

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
With no over heating or coolant loss your rings are going or gone
If 3 plugs are like that shouldn't be to long before it goes. Especially if you ride it hard

definitely oil, most likely past the piston rings. Its obvious by the oil and calcium deposits on the spark plugs.

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
Piston rings will set ya back $100.00 - $125.00. You could do this your self
Valve Stem Seal is roughly $25.00 for a set
New valves will probably be about $10.00 a piece
This is all depending on if your cylinder walls are not scored also. If the cylinder walls are scored and depending on how bad. Your looking at getting the block machined or if they cant replace the whole block.

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
you could do all the work if you had an engine stand and some tools. You could really save money that way.

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
Well I know the basics, i mean the deepest ive gone in an engine is to replace injector seals, beyond there ive never removed or seen anything.

Re: Whats could be the problem? pix inside
There are vids on youtube and instructions on the internet, it doesnt have to be the same motor, you just need to know the basics becuase motors are all somewhat similar on the inside. The videos from BoxWrench are pretty good.
