Default Intermittent problem with '94 4.0 MT

The truck will sometimes start and run fine, then you stop at your destination and it won't start. The battery will turn over the starter, but when the engine "starts", it won't stay running. There is fuel pressure at the fuel rail (not sure how much). Sometimes when you attempt to start it, you can't hear the fuel pump; but like I said there is fuel spraying at the fuel rail. Other times, you can just go to the truck and it starts and runs fine. I pulled the fuel relay and ignition relay and they don't have any corrosion on the terminals. Any suggestions or troubleshooting I can do to narrow down this problem?

how old are you plugs? you may be getting moisture in your plugs, a simple swap of plugs will fix it.

Default My guess...

My guess would be the fuel pump itself, since you mentioned that you cannot hear it sometimes. That is a big clue. I had this problem on my 94 Mazda 3.0L, sometimes it would run fine, sometimes it would die at an intersection, sometimes it would re-start, sometimes it would only start at the dealer after being towed there....finally they removed the gas tank and replaced the fuel pump...problem solved. Those pumps on the 94's are junk, I'm on my 3rd one since 96.

Wink 97 problem with starting

I had also experienced this intermittent problem with starting problemon my 1997. I thought it was the fuel pump and changed it out only to find the the problem was still there. I talked to a mechanic and he said to check the crankshaft sensor ( located bottom left of crank). Check the connection -remove plug and inspect and put it together again and try to start it. Mine did start so I'm hoping it was just a connection problem. If it continues to act up, I will change the sensor ( available from aftermarket) For what's it worth - I hope this helped!!! Phil

Just a heads up - on my 1997, when my fuel pump has failed, I found the quickest way to replace the pump is to pull the truck box (6 bolts- size torx 55 or 60 bit and unplug the light wiring.) and move it back 2 feet and let it rest on the rear tires and bumper. Two guys can lift it and slide it back. The fuel pump/sending unit are easy to access and replace. It took me about 2 hours to do and now I know what I'm doing I'm sure it would only take 1.0-1.5 hrs. It sure beats fighting the fuel tank and working from below!
Hope this helps someone out there! Phil
