94 Ranger Accelerating Problem
I have a 1994 4.0...4x4...5 speed with 242k on it. Over the past few months I have noticed when accelerating that I have the occasional "pop" or "hiccup" like the engine is stuttering or missing. It is a very quick pop and is usually only if I really get into the gas like going up a hill or beating traffic. It may be one pop or it may be a sequence. It is not like a backfire coming out of the exhaust...but instead like the motor is choked up in some way. I honestly do not know much of anything about the fuel injection or any of the computer censors. So far I have replaced the fuel & air filter since they both needed it and to see if I could get lucky and that solve the problem...but it hasn't.
I have also noticed this problem is greatly exaggerated in warm muggy weather and when I have been doing highway driving with consistent higher speeds and revs for a sustained amount of time. My daily commute for work is about 15 miles of highway driving between 60-65 mph around 2000-2300 rpms. Once I immediately get off the highway and come to a stop anywhere and then take off, the "pop" or "hiccup" is at its very worst as I accelerate through the gears. At this point the missing makes the whole truck shake and is not just one but definitely a sequence of pops and hiccups. At idle the truck is perfectly fine. The problem is only when accelerating.
This problem is hardly noticeable if the weather is cooler or if I am just driving at speeds of 45 mph or slower. Any ideas on what I have going on?
