It was my brother's scanner. It said engine temp sensor self test not working. I got surging idle and it stalls if it idles too long. The scanner says both banks are lean. If the temp sensor isn't working the computer may be making it run lean. There are 2 temp sensors side by side but I don't know which one to replace... way to much shit goin on under the hood to follow the wires

Clean your MAF, that may help with the surging. I'll go look some stuff up and get back to you, what is the code though? Like P---- or what ever it is

That will register as a code. The other thing is you may not have driven the vehicle long enough for it to get all the proper parameters tested in the PCM

Replace the sensor. The difference is:

-Sending unit (goes the the gauge) has only one wire.
-Sensor (goes to the computer) has two or three wires.

Since the sensor gives the computer info on the air/fuel mixture, I would fix that before I did anything else. Cleaning the MAF is always a good idea though.

The gauge sending unit may have either one or two wires depending on year and engine. His 2002 4.0L has two wires to each ECT connector.

ECT (PCM sensor): Light green/red and gray/red
ECT (gauge sending unit): red/white and black/white

I have a 2001 4.0L six with a P1116 engine coolant temp sensor self test out of range. The dash gauge reads in the middle. Is this due to faulty gauge?

Where is the gauge located?

The gauge and the PCM use two different independent sensors. The code is related to the PCM sensor and has nothing to do with the gauge.

Not sure that I understand. Are you saying that code P1116 is for a faulty PCM (powertrain control module)? The references that I find say that the engine temp sensor is failing it's self-test. Wouldn't this mean that the sensor should be replaced?

I appreciate your answer. I have purchased a replacement sensor, but if I need to look elsewhere, I'd rather take the sensor back than have blown that $20 and need to spend more time/money elsewhere. Thanks.

The Coolant Temperature Sender (usually black or brown) lights up the idiot light or the water temp gauge..
The CTS coolant temperature sensor send signals to the ECU (computer) is (usually Grey)
