Default 94 4.0 tick

Hey guys I have a 94 w/ the 4.0 and it has a bad tick. Its there till the truck completely warms up. But it gets loud then get quiet. I had to take my thermostat out cause it was getting too hot with our weather we are having. Thought it might be a lifter but at times it sounds like 2 different noises. It just baffles me that it goes away when it warms up. I have tried almost everything to make it stop except tear it apart. Anything will help

Ditto on the exhaust but why are you removing the thermostat?

It doesn't sound like an exhaust leak. I know what one sounds like and its different. I took the thermostat out cause my truck is running too hot with it in. Its a brand new thermostat but our weather has been too hot. That way it runs cooler

I live in NC and it is hot and humid here and I run a 195 thermostat. You should never need to run without one unless there is another problem.

a) early(ish) build 4.0 valve train noise.......commonly caused by pushrod (upper end tip) and/or rocker arm wear.

b) put your thermostat back in (after you prove it's working like it's supposed to, AND if it's a Motorcraft brand t-stat) and find the the real cause of the overheating. Start by making sure it can get good airflow through the radiator and A/C condenser. If equipped with A/C, be aware that chit can build up between the two and restrict airflow. Price is right and won't take much time, really.
