Angry stalling, popping, hesitation and no trottle responce

i have changed a lot of stuff and getting no where.I have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, injector pressure regulator, pcv valve, iac valve, tps sensor, mass sensor, spark plugs and wires, engine coolant sensor to computer, and the oxygen sensors.some stuff came faulty when i had a diagnostics check.no mater what i have changed it still does the same thing.it stalls while idoling, hesitates when excelerating(when it does run)and the major thing is when i start it and put it in gear and let the clutch out to go the trottle does not respond.i can push gas pedal all the way to the floor and does nothing, and as soon as i push the clutch back in it will rev up the rpm's.no mater whaat i have changed it still does the samething.i am thinking now that it may be the power train control module.does any one have any ideas.

jlee1966: I have a simular problem with a '93 Ranger 4x4 with the 4 L engine. I am getting Codes: 157-Low Mass Air voltage, 172-Heated Ex Gas Oxy-rich Bank #1, 136-Heated Ex Gas Oxy-lean Bank #2, 538-Low RPM+Cyl Bal+Cyl ID, 536-Break on-off ,565-Canister Purge solenoid circuit failure. My Ranger would not even get out of the driveway until I took off the Mass Air and sprayed and sprayed and sprayed it with Mass Air cleaner, and did the same to the throtle body. On the throtle body I also used an old tooth brush and scrubbed it several times, spraying it each time. Now it will run, but I still get a light and have interrmittent problems. One of them is at idle sometimes it wants to buck, surging, until it is underway. I changed the TPI, but no help. I also replaced the fuel filter. I cut the old one open and it looked good. If you find a fix please let me know and I will be sure to do the same. I know that that there are experts out there-please help us! Ollie Octopus

I hate to sound obvious here, but have you checked the air filter? These are all symptomatic of a lack of fuel or lack of air. Given that you've replaced everything but didn't mention the air filter, its the only other thing I can think of.

Thanks for the tip FireRanger, but it was no help. It is very easy to overlook the obvious. I had previously blown out the air cleaner element with my air compressor, but now tried completely removing the element. I will try the before cat O2 sensors next. Ollie Octopus

I would stop replacing all these parts. You're buying new replacement sensors and equipment for things that could not possibly have anything to do with this. Cat O2 sensors wouldn't do this and you're just throwing money at it now.

Going back to what I said before, there are two things that would cause this. Lack of fuel or lack of air. You've replaced the fuel components so I think the next thing to check is fuel pressure. It can be checked with a gauge, but I'm unfamiliar with the procedure. If it is low, then I bet the problem is in the fuel pickup in the tank. On the air supply end of things, there isn't much else to get in the way unless there is a plastic bag stuck on the intake tube behind the grill. Might want to give that a peek.

It revs in neutral but not in gear? Think it might be a vacuum? vacuum lines seem to screw with the weirdest shit.

After a month of my '93 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 being down, I finally solved the problem. The truck has close to 90,000 miles on it so I went ahead and replaced the two upstream O2 sensors, the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires. No help. I tried another coil. No help. Fuel press was reading 20 psi when it shoulod have been 30 psi so I replaced the fuel pump. No help. The voltage on the Mass Air was reading low, so I replaced it. No help. My OBI Test set said that my Ignition Control Unit was bad. I don't have one, nor do I have an EGR. My Haynes and Chilton Manuals tell me that the unit is on the radiator support, and Ford gave me a print out that says that it is behind the battery. It isn't at either place. I finally figured out that it must be built into the PCM (computer). The problem is trying to find one. Ford was unable to order one as it is too old. After checking around I discovered that NAPA can send out your old computer and have it rebuilt. It cost me $214.00 plus shipping. That solved the problem. It now runs great and the check engine light is finally off. I hope that this helps someone.

something s wrong with the maf or the wires to it when i had no maf i could plug it in and it would do the same thing it did with you so to contradict myself it is not getting any air through it.
