Rough idle after new air intake installation
Hello, everyone..(this is my first post by the way) Anyway, I have a 2003 Ranger 4.0 and I just installed a new air intake on Saturday and it seems to idle a little rough (just a very slight shaking on occasion) I did disconnect the battery in order to reset the ECU.. but I'm just curious if this is normal and does it generally take a while for the computer to become accustomed to the new air intake? Other than that there are no other issues and the truck seems to accelerate a bit better than with the stock intake. Any input would be appreciated.. Thanks!

There are lots of threads on stuff like this, I'm going to assume you installed a k&n set up or something similar. If you're running an oiled filter you most likely over oiled it And drew oil onto your MAF (the sensor right after the filter). K&n will tell you that the oil is MAF safe.... It is, but the crap that sticks to the oil is not. I would tell you to buy some MAF cleaner. Don't use ANY thing but MAF cleaner CRC makes some.... It comes in a grey can, you can get it anywhere. Then wash he filter and lightly oil it this time. I would encourage you to look at dry flow options from AEM or get a hybrid k&n AEM filter that doesn't take oil.
You're new here and I understand but most people have here have strong negative feelings about changing the intakes on these trucks as they really pretty much come stock with a cold air set up. But the noise is fun from an aftermarket kit.

Re: Rough idle after new air intake installation
Thanks for the reply..it's not a K&N or any kind of kit really, we simply removed the air box and attached a large filter, and I did clean the MAF as well. I'm guessing I need not worry unless the rough idle persists or get worse. We didn't do anything permanent and I still have the old box so I can go back to stock if need be.

In that case just be sure all the lines in the intake tube are hooked up or blocked. Ensure the tube is secure to the throttle body. It sounds like a dirty MAF but you could just be getting in metered air, confusing the computer.

Re: Rough idle after new air intake installation
Easy fix.
remove the after market junk
put back on factory box
install new paper filter...
those large intakes do absolutely NOTHING for a ranger.
Welcome to the site, try the search feature, there are 100s of threads about CAI on here, now one more.

Re: Rough idle after new air intake installation
Well actually this DID do something ..I did notice an increase in acceleration. I wouldn't have bothered posting if I found a thread pertaining to my exact mod. It's not really a CAI kit per se, like I said. I simply removed the air box and installed a spectre performance air filter. I don't claim to be an experienced mechanic (my brother helped me out with this) so I figured I'd give this a shot to see if anyone could offer some insight. Sorry if I annoyed anyone...

Re: Rough idle after new air intake installation
Thanks foutd77...We'll have to take another look at it to double check if everything is sealed and perhaps clean it. Starting to get a lot of pollen and foggy weather around here so maybe that is effecting it? dangerranger94 ..it's a quick, cheap mod..I just hope it works out in the long run.

Re: Rough idle after new air intake installation
It seems like whenever someone messes with their air intake system this kind of thing happens. I like to think if Ford could improve their vehicle by a noticeable amount by changing the intake system they would have done so in the factory.
Anyone recall the thread about the guy with the K&N filter where the engine would misfire because he was sucking in snowflakes through the filter? Paper filters and stock boxes are the way to go.
