Exclamation Challenge! Can you diagnose? Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, MAF?

6 months ago, after parking my 2005 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0 Manual RWD at the supermarket and coming back to it, I started the truck, the engine sputtered and stalled, constant attempts to start the truck resulted in the engine turning over but not starting. Called tow truck. After waiting for an hour, tow truck arrived, and tow truck driver was able to start it without any problem. No other symptoms where displayed. No loss of power. We could repeatedly turn the vehicle on and off.

Yesterday, after washing my truck at a local car wash, and getting it back, it displayed the same symptoms. I did not attempt to restart the truck, rather I waited 5 minutes and then it started just fine, symptom free.

Today, same thing happened, but after 1h 30m of waiting and failed attempts, I decided to tow the truck home. After it was dropped off, the truck started without any problem. What could be causing this? I do not feel a change in performance while I drive it, whether I step on the gas or its idling.

Googled the location of the inertia switch so I don't need help with that. Would you be able to describe what the inertia switch does and why it would be the cause?

Also, What should I be checking for? Connectivity?

What happens if I press the switch?

Thank you for all your help!

that cuts power to the fuel pump in an accident...if those start to go bad they can cause an occasional no start issue

Ok so I checked the switch... it looks fine. All the wires are like new nothing seems to be worn our overheating.

Ok, I like challenges. I'd first zero in on the fuel pump relay, known historically to be a sore spot. It's absolutely not the fuel filter (clogging filters cause engine cutout due to fuel starvation when you step on it, like when on a freeway on ramp or when passing a car on a highway) and based on what you've said it surely is NOT the MAF sensor. No codes before or after the intermittent no-starts, rights?

Edit: Too bad you don't know if it's not starting because of a lack of fuel or lack of spark. With that said and for lack of further info (it would really benefit you and anyone helping you with the diagnosis if you determine which of the two are lacking), the ECM relay should also be suspect. Sometimes these relays get corroded, pitted contacts and this results in intermittent operation. They cost like, $7 or so, they are a common part, and they are sold in any auto parts store.

I agree. It has to be something small. I haven't had problems since. I'll check the relay... And keep you.guys updated. Also, I have my mechanic on standby by and he agreed to go wherever I'm at whenever it happens again to try and diagnose the probpen

If it's not the fuel system the next thing I would check is the camshaft sensor. The same thing happened to my dad's car and that's what it was

Have you checked the starter? You could possibly have a loose ground or starter wire.

My '99 did the exact same thing it was the Crankshaft position sensor.

There really are systematic, methodical, focused ways to diagnose engine problems and isolate components rather than guessing and speculating (ie, spray n' prey). Really, there are. If the service department at the Ford dealer (and most any other shop that wants to stay in business) fixed cars like this customers would be routinely arrested and prosecuted for disorderly conduct/assaulting/murdering service writers, the incompetent mechanics and the cashier. Just saying is all, time and money are resources to be used wisely.

True, but he asked for feedback on this forum and we gave it to him. Which I'm sure he found more helpful then your last post.

Hopefully he's bright enough to see the obvious point in my last post and act, it shouldn't be too tough for most peeps, . Barring that, joining the spray and prey foo's, the buy this and put it in the gas, it might work, I have no idea why, hey, blow $50 on a part that some kid on the interwebz said would work, but he can't explain why, oh chit, that didn't fix it, now what to buy, oh crap, another sensor, which one, etc etc etc foo's that is always an option, although not a very wise one. Yeah, that's a useful approach to promote.
