Default Slave cylinder bad?

So I started looking into the pickup because the clutch will no longer engage, the pedal just goes all the way to the floor. Its a 99 4.0. We started by pulling the check valve out of the housing and then holding it to see if we could get pressure. and we could. i would get pressure when i pressed down about half way. but then you put it back into the house and no pressure anymore. so we tried to bleed it. just kept getting air coming through the line, so after about a half jug of dot 3 we stopped doing that. Im guessing this means the slave cylinder is sucking in air from there, but I have not very much experience with this.

input would be appreciated.

If you disconnect the hose from the slave and have more that about 1/8" of movement on shaft running into the master, then you've either got a bad master or air in the system. If it's firm, then the slave is probably your problem. Any fluid in the bell housing? If so, it's the slave.

Well we haven't torn the bell housing apart yet, there is some oil leaking but that has nothing to do with the clutch problem. There doesn't currently seem to be any fluid leaking from the bell housing. but there may be dot 3 mixed in with that oil tho.
